Total Wine and More, a retailer that bills itself as a wine superstore, plans to open a location in south Reno early next year.

The company headquartered at Potomac, Md., leased 29,118 square feet at 6671 S. Virginia St. for its first northern Nevada location. That was previously the location of a Linens-N-Things store.

Total Wine and More operates more than 60 stores nationwide, and it's been steadily increasing its presence in Western markets, said David Trone, who launched the retailer in 1991 with his brother, Robert.

The stores typically carry about 8,000 varieties of wine, 1,000 kinds of beer, 2,000 varieties of spirits and about 600 kinds of accessories, Trone said.

They include a walk-in humidor for cigars and tobacco products and a classroom facility for wine education.

Trone said the demographics of neighborhoods around the Reno location are attractive to the wine retailer.

"The income and education are excellent," he said. "The retail market appears to be extremely healthy."

The company also was spurred to expand into the Reno market because it's found success with new store locations in Henderson and Summerlin in southern Nevada.

Trone said the company's stores employ about 40.

Roxanne Stevenson, Rick Casazza and Adam Wexelblatt of Colliers International represented Total Wine in its lease negotiations.
