Umpqua Bank said last week it will add a commercial banking center to its northern Nevada operations, and it hired a veteran Reno banker to head the new operation.

Rob Humphreys, who previously worked as northern Nevada market president and head of the middle-market commercial banking team for U.S. Bank in Reno, joined Umpqua Bank to lead the new operation.

Humphreys said he made the move because Umpqua Bank is moving aggressively to build a commercial loan portfolio in northern Nevada. He said U.S. Bank had curtailed its lending in the region during the recession.

He's been working in commercial banking for 25 years.

Joining Humphreys in leaving U.S. Bank to become vice presidents of the Umpqua Bank center will be Nick Butler and Teresa Courier, who co-managed a $300 million portfolio in their previous jobs.

Also joining the new center as a vice president is Steve Erger, who was a vice president of Nevada Security Bank. Umpqua acquired Reno-based Nevada Security Bank from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. after it failed in June.

Erger, who has worked in commercial banking for 15 years, managed an $80 million portfolio at Nevada Security.

The new center will be housed at the Umpqua Bank office at 3490 S. Virginia Street.
