Two Carson High School students on a weekend scuba diving excursion to Northern California died Saturday during a dive in Monterey Bay.
Lt. Jeff Jackson with the Monterey Police Department said the incident happened about noon as the two were participating for a dive in water between 40 and 70 feet deep from a commercial diving boat with about two dozen people on board.
Carson City Schools Superintendent Richard Stokes said the event, which included a visit to the Monterey Aquarium and several diving trips, was sponsored by a Reno-based scuba company.
The two 17-year-old boys were juniors in Carson High School's oceanography class.
Jackson said the incident is under investigation and was unable to provide further details. The names of the students were not released.
Monterey, two hours south of San Francisco, is a world-renowned diving destination.
