Library News & Notes: Youth activity events slated

The Carson City Library continues the Community Read theme, "Novel Destinations," focusing on the culture, traditions and fascination of New Zealand. With movies, story time opportunities, book discussions and teen meetings, there is something for everyone at the library.

• The Teen Book Club will be discussing "Whale Rider" by Witi Tame Ihimaera from 3-5 p.m. Friday. The novel chronicles the magical, lore-laden story of a young Maori girl and her mysterious destiny. With the beauty of New Zealand and the fascinating culture of the Maori people as a backdrop, the book tackles tradition, sexism, faith and the mythology in this bittersweet story.

• The Teen Advisory Board also meets 3-5 p.m. Friday with pizza and drinks for all who attend. This enthusiastic, community-oriented group of middle and high school students plans programs, assists with library programs and workshops, and volunteers for various events. New members are always welcome.

• Regular Family Story Time programs featuring 20 minutes of songs and rhymes are available at 10:15 and 10:45 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and a Bilingual Story Time meets at 6 p.m. Thursday. Tickets for these free events are available at the Youth desk. A special Bilingual Story Time, "El Dia De Los Libros," convenes at 6 p.m. April 28.

Capital City Reads event April 26

• Participants will get the unique chance to decide if the book "Whale Rider" is better than the film. The movie version of Ihimaera's novel and winner of the Audience Award in the 2003 Sundance Film Festival will be featured at 5:30 p.m. April 26 in the auditorium.

Library board meeting April 28

As its main program, the Library Board of Trustees answers questions and presents a wide variety of examples regarding digital media labs. The meeting, held at 5:30 p.m. April 28 in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, will feature clips from the award-winning YouMedia program at the Chicago library as well as information relating to Say Media, a digital media company working in Carson City.

It is hoped that the lab will provide technology opportunities for community teenagers and demonstrate the ever-expanding job opportunities in this field.

Nev. Legal Services clinics, workshops offered on April 28

Nevada Legal Services continues to provide assistance for those without legal representation with clinics from 12-1 p.m., 1-3 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. on April 28.

The topic for this series is small claims court.

New check-out system thanks to Friends of Library

Thanks in large part of the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation, the library has been able to install a state-of-the-art check-in/check-out system and restore the hours lost during recent budget cuts.

An automated materials handling machine will make book processing even more efficient.

Successful book sales and daily returns at the Browser's Corner have been a vital contribution during these tough economic times.

A membership drive will commence in June, but an application can be picked up at the Browser's Corner during library hours.㢮
