Social to welcome Vietnam veterans

Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Spring Social and Raffle will take place 6-9 p.m. May 5 at High Sierra Brewing Co., 302 N. Carson St.

The social will preceded by a business meeting at 5:30 p.m.

All Vietnam veterans are invited to the party for free with others $10 at the door. The event features appetizers and live entertainment.

All proceeds benefit the local homeless veterans project.

Bring your spouse or significant other and especially any Vietnam veteran you know for a night to show appreciation for their sacrifice. RSVP Rick at 267-2385.

Monthly swing dance night planned

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance party April 30 at the Brewery Arts Center's Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

There will be a lesson at 7 p.m., with the social dance at 8-10:30 p.m. Partners are not required. Lesson $7 for HSSDC and any swing dance club members or $10 for nonmembers; dance $7 for members of swing clubs and $10 for nonmembers. Join the club that night, and the dance is free. Artisans' Cafe will be open.

Bark, Whine & Dine to raise funds for Parks 4 Paws.

Parks 4 Paws, is holding its 3rd annual Bark, Whine & Dine May 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Fuji Park Event Center.

The event is hosted by Mayor Bob Crowell and will have barbecue from Locals, microbrews, a silent auction and raffle drawings. There will be live music by CHS Link Crew. Cost is $25 and tickets may be purchased at paws4parks.com, or by calling Ilona Strull at 775-721-4931.

In conjunction with the event, the group is raffling a quilt entitled Man's Best Friend. Raffle tickets are on sale with the drawing to be held at the event. Winners need not be present.

Dayton club hosts town hall meeting

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Dayton will host a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. May 18 at Dayton High School to announce the upcoming summer program and fundraiser. The club also wants to update the community on progress and the need for committee volunteers and support.

Local committee members, along with Chief Professional Officer Travis Crowder, Director of Program Development Christina Hurt, and Dayton Units Director Dan McLaughlin will be on hand to answer questions and update the community on all things Dayton.

The club will address the possible change in school hours and days, as well as how the Boys & Girls Club will assist with these issues.

Run for the Bucket planning for 5K

The fifth annual walk/ run/bike will start at 9 a.m. May 21, so come early to register.

Run for the Bucket is sponsored by Court Appointed Special Advocates, Muscle Powered and We Can Carson City.

It will be held at Riverview Park at the east end of Fifth Street.

Donations of spare change, checks and large or small bills will be accepted in large buckets at the event.

The 5K course is along the Mexican Ditch Trail.

Nevada's children

A legislative breakfast to discuss issues related to children accessing nutritious foods across the state of the Nevada will be from 7:30-9 a.m. today in room 3100 of the Legislative Building.

This breakfast is sponsored by Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Three Square and the Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy.

The breakfast meeting will emphasize ways to improve participation in school breakfasts and other child nutrition programs across the state. Nevada currently is ranked last in the nation for school breakfast and lunch participation.

Girl Scouts to spend day at Legislature

Government Day for the Girl Scouts of Nevada offers Girl Scouts from all over both Northern and Southern Nevada, an opportunity to discover the state government system in Nevada, connect with state legislators and take action in becoming effective advocates on issues they find important.

Today's all-day event at the state capital gives the girl the opportunity to explore and learn about the Nevada legislative process and develop their own voice.

Girl Scouts will be traveling from all around Nevada to attend this annual event, which offers each girl a hands-on experience through the legislative process while giving them a fun learning environment to enhance their leadership skills.

Carson City

seeks volunteer

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving approximately 10-16 hours per month on the Carson City Airport Authority. The Airport Authority is a seven-member board that oversees all matters pertaining to the Carson City Airport.

There is one position open for a four-year term that will expire in October 2013. The opening on the Authority is for industrial. The person must be a manufacturer within a three-mile radius of the Carson City Airport, but not a Fixed Base Operator.

Applications will be accepted until May 30. Under the terms of Assembly Bill 103, and signed by the governor, the area for such members was enlarged to a three-mile radius of the airport. If a volunteer cannot be found, supervisors are permitted to appoint a member who represents the general public.

Spaghetti feed helps support Meals on Wheels

The Kiwanis Club is hosting a spaghetti feed at the Senior Center from 4:30-7 p.m. April 30 to help the Carson City Senior Citizens Center and the Meals on Wheels Program during these tough economic times. The funds raised from the event will help provide meals to seniors.

The club has a long history with the center, and originally founded the first senior center building in Carson City.

"To this day, they remain avid supporters of seniors," said senior center director Janice McIntosh.

The menu includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, beverage and dessert. The cost is $5 for seniors, $7 for adults, $20 for a family of four.

Pancake breakfast to benefit Food for Thought

Parkway Manor Apartments will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser to benefit Food for Thought from 7-11 a.m. Saturday at 603 E. College Parkway. Breakfast will be prepared by the Carson City Kiwanis Club.

There will be no fee for the breakfast, however donations of money or non-perishable food items will be appreciated and given directly to Food for Thought, a local non-profit organization that reaches out to school age students on free and reduced lunch programs so that they do not go hungry on the weekends.

Food for the breakfast has been donated by Trader Joe's, Raley's, Grocery Outlet and Safeway.

Learn to dance in new class to start Monday

Need to learn to dance to be ready for the coming wedding season, or maybe a vacation cruise?

Dance instructor Larry Ward will present several dance classes beginning in May. Ward has 55-years dance experience.

An eight-week ballroom dance class begins April 25.

Classes will be 7:30-9 p.m. Mondays at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St.

This class is designed to get you ready for all the social events that celebrate on the dance floor with emphasis on the cha-cha, waltz, fox trot, and east coast swing.

Cost of the class is $8 per session for adults and $6 for teens.

Practice your new moves at a night of ballroom dancing with live music by Don and Nadine 7:30-10 p.m. May 14 at Genoa Town Hall. Cost is $8 per person and includes light refreshments.

An encore social dance will be 7:30-10 p.m. Sept. 17.
