PREP ROUNDUP: Seventh inning lifts Carson past Reed

The Carson baseball team scored six times in the seventh inning en route to a 15-9 win over Reed under the lights in Sparks Tuesday.

"We were pretty aggressive on the base paths," said coach Cody Farnworth, whose team swiped seven bases.

The seventh inning outburst started with Nick Domitrovich's two-RBI double that put Carson ahead. Colby Blueberg's three-run homer sealed the win.

Austin Pacheco's fifth home run in three games in the first inning gave Carson an early 1-0 lead. Reed tied the game in the first after a walk to the lead off batter came around to score on an error.

Blueberg would score on a wild pitch in the second to give the Senators the lead again.

They would extend their lead to 7-1 in the third when Domitrovich, walked, stole second and scored on a single by Rory Petersen. Later in the inning Petersen would score after Adam Whitt was hit by a pitch. Zak Harjes then knocked in two with a single. Whitt then scored on an error making it 7-1.

Carson would go up 8-1, when Blueberg doubled in Pacheco, who had singled.

Then Reed had a big inning. Carson starter Blueberg, who has been hampered by a turf-toe injury, left the game after getting a jam. He turned the ball over to Drew Moreland. Moreland, Farnworth said pitched well getting a lot of groundballs that got through the defense. Moreland gave up six runs, five earned on six hits in two innings.

Casey Wolfe relieved Moreland and picked up the win in two innings of one-hit work.

The teams traded runs in the sixth, with Carson scoring after Chance Quilling scored on an error. He reached on a single and stole second and third before scoring.

That set the stage for the seventh.

After Wolfe was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Brock Pradere walked. Dion Copoulos then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third.

Domitrovich then doubled and later scored on an error. Petersen then singled before Pacheco was hit by a pitch setting the stage for Blueberg's big fly.

Blueberg finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs; Pacheco finished 3-for-4 with an RBI; Petersen added two hits and RBI; Harjes and Domitrovich both finished with a hit and two RBIs.

"We came back and responded really well," Farnworth said.

Carson is 8-5 in league now and hosts Reed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Carson High.

AGAINST GALENA

The thing about tight pitchers' duels is that someone eventually has to come up on the short end of them.

On Tuesday it was Kameron Van Winkle and the Douglas Tigers, who fell to regional favorite Galena 4-3 in Minden.

Douglas fell to 10-11 overall and 4-7 in Northern 4A play with the loss.

"It's definitely a tough one to lose," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "But we played better baseball than we did the last couple of games and that was good to see. We can live with playing that way and having a shot to win at the nd, but these close losses definitely sting.

"It's tough to swallow."

Van Winkle was solid against the Grizzlies' high-powered offense, striking out five, walking three and scattering eight hits in taking the loss.

But Galena's Jace Puckett won the battle on the mound, striking out nine, scattering five hits and overcoming five walks and two hit batsmen to pick up the win.

"Those two guys obviously are two of the best pitchers in the league," Jacobsen said. "They went pitch for pitch with each other and unfortunately we just came out on the short side today. We have to find a way off the short side."

Puckett had to pitch out of a bases-loaded two-out jam in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

AT WOLF RUN

The Carson High golf team finished third Tuesday at Wolf Run Golf Club. The Senators shot at team score of 436 to finish behind Galena (386) and Manogue (387). A Galena player eagled the 18th hole giving them the win.

Carson was led by Garrett Gingell, Mitch Parra and Roman Smokey, who shot 77, 82 and 83 respectively. Nathaniel Brown carded a 92, Nathaniel Brown shot a 102. Andy Copper, a freshman playing in his first tournament scored 108.

"We played pretty well," coach Terry Gingell said. "Those are good scores for Mitch and Roman. Our top three played steady."

Carson returns to action next Wednesday at Arrowcreek.
