Major wine store opens in Reno

Total Wine and More is opened a 20,000-square-foot store on April 14 at 6671 S. Virginia St., in Reno.

The store carries more than 8,000 varieties of wine, 3,000 spirits and 2,500 kinds of beer.

The company, founded in 1991, runs 73 wine "superstores" in 11 states. Because of its size it can offer discounted pricing for wines, spirits and beers.

Pancake breakfast to benefit Food for Thought

Parkway Manor Apartments will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser to benefit Food for Thought from 7-11 a.m. Saturday at 603 E. College Parkway. Breakfast will be prepared by the Carson City Kiwanis Club.

There will be no fee for the breakfast, however donations of money or non-perishable food items will be appreciated and given directly to Food for Thought, a local non-profit organization that reaches out to school age students on free and reduced lunch programs so that they do not go hungry on the weekends.

Food for the breakfast has been donated by Trader Joe's, Raley's, Grocery Outlet and Safeway.

Elk's fish fry fundraiser today

The Carson City Elk's Lodge will sponsor a fish fry with all the trimmings at 6 p.m. today at the lodge at 515 N. Nevada St., Carson City. Cost is $12.

The fish fry is a fundraiser to benefit the Annual Fishing Derby.

Kiwanis spaghetti feed helps support Meals on Wheels

The Kiwanis Club is hosting a spaghetti feed at the Senior Center from 4:30-7 p.m. April 30 to help the Carson City Senior Citizens Center and the Meals on Wheels Program during these tough economic times. The funds raised from the event will help provide meals to seniors.

The club has a long history with the center, and originally founded the first senior center building in Carson City.

"To this day, they remain avid supporters of seniors," said senior center director Janice McIntosh.

The menu includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, beverage and dessert. The cost is $5 for seniors, $7 for adults, $20 for a family of four.

Learn to dance in new class to start Monday

Need to learn to dance to be ready for the coming wedding season, or maybe a vacation cruise?

Dance instructor Larry Ward will present several dance classes beginning in May. Ward has 55-years dance experience.

An eight-week ballroom dance class begins April 25. Classes will be 7:30-9 p.m. Mondays at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St.

This class is designed to get you ready for all the social events that celebrate on the dance floor with emphasis on the cha-cha, waltz, fox trot, and east coast swing.

Cost of the class is $8 per session for adults and $6 for teens.

Practice your new moves at a night of ballroom dancing with live music by Don and Nadine 7:30-10 p.m. May 14 at Genoa Town Hall. Cost is $8 per person and includes light refreshments.

An encore social dance will be 7:30-10 p.m. Sept. 17.

DBA to host June downtown bike, car festival

The Carson City Downtown Business Association is hosting its inaugural "Legends of the West Bike & Car Fest," June 3-5.

This event is closing the streets of downtown Carson City and opening its streets up to bikes and cars in 16 different classes with trophies being awarded.

Activities include a show and shine, motorcycle agility demonstration, treasure hunts, evening cruise, vendors, food, Elks pancake breakfast, Miss Legends contest, Legends wedding and an awards ceremony. Live entertainment will be at Firkin Friday and Rock the House Saturday night, as well as a Sock Hop with DJ "EM."

'Get on the Bus' tour to cover Carson River Watershed

The Carson Water Subconservancy District will host a Carson River Watershed tour from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 16 and May 17.

The tour will go from the headwaters in Alpine County, Calif., to the terminus at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge in Churchill County. The tour will begin each day at the Carson City Smith's grocery store parking lot on East William Street.

Featured speakers will discuss topics such as the history of the Carson River, the Alpine Decree, Wild and Scenic, water quality and quantity challenges, floodplain protection, and many more.

This is an opportunity to share ideas and add a voice to public discussion.

The cost to register is $100, or $110 after April 22, and includes lunch and snacks. Space is limited, registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Free foreclosure class for homeowners

Nevada Legal Services is offering a free foreclosure information class available to any homeowner in Nevada at 2 p.m. May 10 at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St.

The class will focus on the foreclosure process including mandatory mediation and the government sponsored loss mitigation options.

Nevada Legal Services is a non-profit, HUD Certified Housing Counseling organization providing free legal services to low income Nevadans.

Dayton Food Pantry's spring yard sale May 7

A big spring yard sale to raise funds for the busy nonprofit, Dayton Food Pantry, will be held 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7 at 4 Enterprise Way in Dayton.

Director Freida Carbery said donations of items for the yard sale are welcome, and can be dropped off between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Food Pantry Monday through Friday.

Emergency Food: Dayton Food Pantry is open for emergency food needs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 4 Enterprise Way on Highway 50. The building space is generously donated by BCB Ventures.

Regular Distribution Days: Normal distribution days for commodities will be noon to 4 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month at Sutro Elementary School in Dayton at 190 Dayton Village Parkway. Special thanks goes to Sutro Elementary's principal, custodians, and counselor and Lyon School District for their generous contribution of this comfortable space for distribution days.
