Tom Henderson will conduct a walking tour of remarkable trees at 10 a.m. May 7 starting near the junction of Mountain and King streets in Carson City. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes, and will conclude at the Bordewich-Bray Elementary School.

Total walking distance is about one mile. Participants are encouraged to bicycle, walk or carpool to this earth-friendly event. The Route No. 3 bus of JAC stops on Division Street, within three blocks of this event.

This stroll along King Street will include several Nevada champion trees, the largest of its species recorded in the state. Henderson will point out several distinctive trees near King Street which he recommends for planting in our climate. The tour will pause at several trees to review their particular characteristics and to provide broader perspectives on the benefits of an urban forest.

Henderson is the founder and president of Healthy Trees, a company formed in 2003 to provide tree care services. He has traveled to arboreta and gardens around North America and Europe to sharpen tree identification skills and to note features of a variety of species. In 2010 he organized a fruit recovery enterprise, the Fruit Barons, which enables volunteers to harvest unclaimed fruit and donate the surplus to several community organizations which feed people.

Henderson is an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and has completed Master Gardener training through University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. He is a member of the International Society of Arboriculture, including its Western Chapter, the American Society of Consulting Arborists, The Arbor Day Foundation, and the California Arborists Association.

Healthy Trees is also a member of the Tree Care Industry Association. Henderson has given many local demonstrations on tree pruning in garden centers and workshops sponsored by the Carson City Shade Tree Council.

Henderson is an advisor to the nascent Carson City group, Friends of the Urban Forest, whose goal is to greatly increase the number of trees planted here through its Canopy the Capital initiative.
