Senators assess health and human services cuts

(AP) - Senators are meeting Wednesday to discuss Health and Human Services budget cuts. The discussion comes just one day after Gov. Brian Sandoval's administration announced $49.4 million was being restored to the governor's proposed budget, thanks to increased federal funding due to the state's dire finances. The agency oversees programs including mental health and welfare services and services for the elderly and disabled.

Nevada was notified last month that it will receive more in matching federal funds for Medicaid programs, largely because per-capita income has declined in the wake of the Great Recession.

The administration is also expecting higher-than-projected tax revenues, which together with the savings announced Tuesday would total more than $100 million.
