On Thursday, Christians nationwide will gather on capital steps and community flagpoles for the 60th annual National Day of Prayer. In the Carson City, churches have planned several events to commemorate the day in union with churches across the nation.
• The day begins with a Prayer Breakfast at 6:30-7:45 a.m. Thursday at the Plaza Hotel in Carson City. Cost is $12.50. For more information, call 775-841-3825.
• The main event is a prayer meeting at noon on the Capital steps, a scene that will be repeated at state capitals and municipal centers across the country.
The Carson City event is organized by the Carson City Ministerial Association. Proclamations will be read from governmental representatives - from President Barrack Obama to Carson City Supervisors - proclaiming May 5 the National Day of Prayer. Several pastors from various Carson City churches will lead prayers for segments of the country, including the nation, state, city and the leaders.
• The Dayton Ministerial Association will host an evening prayer event at 7-8 p.m. at the Dayton Court House to offer up prayer for the community and country.

The annual prayer observance began in 1952 when President Harry S. Truman declared a National Day of Prayer and signed into law an annual event. In 1988, the first Thursday in May was established as a National Day of Prayer.
