A previous article, "How to do a successful senior move," suggested getting some help and using the "three piles" (Keep, Give Away and Sell) method.
Here are some additional tips to make that move as successful as possible.
1. Plan Ahead. Don't just go at it "like you were killing snakes - can't wait to get it done." Give some time to get a plan in mind. It's better if it's on paper. Some seniors need time to get adjusted to the idea of moving. There is no need to rush about and cause a lot of stress.
2. Take Pictures. With today's cameras and cell phones, it easy to do. That is a way to preserve memories.
3. Plan the new home layout. Ask for suggestions and map out how the new home will be with the furniture, etc. If "rightsizing" is being done, not all the furniture will fit.
4. Get Help. There are several local moving businesses that will do the heavy lifting
5. Schedule who will do what. Some seniors will feel left out if you don't have some things for them to do. They will be under some stress from the change. If they have some tasks in addition to making decisions, they will handle the change better.
6. Choose Where to Start. Maybe first do a room that does not have a lot of sentimental or emotional items. Bathrooms can be packed up quickly. Once the process is started, the other rooms will go easier.
7. Take Time to Listen. Moving will help recall many stories. This is a good time to write down, or even use a simple tape recorder to record, memories about the family, the home, etc.
8. Special Box. Do a special box for medications, toiletries, medical devices, etc.
9. Eat and Drink. Everyone needs to keep the energy level up. Everyone should be sure to eat and keep drinking water. Be sure the medications are taken on schedule.
The help by family and friends will help make their move a successful one. However, don't be surprised if there are some emotional moments. It's all part of life.
