Conference could draw businesses to N. Nevada
Last week, we hosted the annual board of directors meeting of the Corporate Aircraft Association in Northern Nevada.
The association represents more than 1,100 corporate flight departments, including most of the Fortune 500 companies. These are directors of flight operations and vice presidents of aviation of Steelcase, ConAgra Foods, Union Pacific Railroad, McDonalds, Raytheon, Bunn Corp., Lowes, American Express and Tidewater.
Every year we meet in different locations around the country, but from their comments, I feel sure they will return to this area before long. I am hopeful they will pass their comments to their chief executive officers, telling them this is a wonderful location for corporate workshops, board meetings and other events.
Our board usually stays at resorts such as Westin, Hyatt, Marriott, etc. In planning this event, it would really have been nice to have the Ormsby House open and available. This would be a big attraction to a corporate event planner.
I have one suggestion to any economic development professional reading this: Check out the National Business Aviation Association's annual convention in October in Las Vegas. This is the world's largest convention of corporate aircraft owners, operators, manufacturers and vendors.
Here is where decision-makers convene. Check out the states that have their economic development personnel at their convention booths. Check out the cities and airports doing the same. We've displayed for years at this convention and grown from 12 companies to more than 1,100. This convention made us. It's where the action is.

Recology would
help the environment
Please review this article about the city of San Francisco and the company Recology. If we were more like San Francisco, Nevada would be recycling already. We now have that opportunity with Recology if they are approved to operate the landfill. I respect their experience and knowledge. Please read this article, and seriously think about what Mr. Steele is thinking about - our environment or money in his pocket. http://www.jgpress.com/archives/_free/002389.html#more

Gathering of 11 religious faiths was a success
July 31 was unique. It was the day when 11 organizations of religious faiths met together at Mills Park Pavilion to picnic, pray, perform and bring foodstuffs to contribute to the Friends In Service Helping (FISH) program's stock for our community's hungry and destitute.
About 200 of us gathered together to greet and eat and sing and play together. Choirs sang and children laughed and played together. We learned each other's names and became friends and found joy in a day of giving and getting love and abundance.
Thank you, Nevada Appeal, for printing the notice of our community's religious organizations' picnic for our community's less fortunate and needy folks.

America needs new financial advice
A family comes to you for financial advice. Their income is $21,000 per year, but they spend $32,000 per year. They have consumer debt of $147,000.
Do you advise (them to) do a detailed budget and cut as much spending as possible, possibly sacrificing giving and lifestyle? Or (do you advise them) to forget about the budget and increase debt by $16,000 with the promise they will reduce their debt this year by $38, and refer them to a group of smarter folks who will recommend a more permanent solution?
The above family's last name is America, and the financial counselor is the Congress.
Time for better advice? Yeah, I thought so.
