Nevada Episcopal church to be 150 years old

St. Paul's the Prospector Episcopal Church in Virginia City will celebrate its 150th anniversary at 5 p.m. Sept. 11.

In September 1861, a traveling priest held the first Episcopal service in Nevada, at the district courthouse in Virginia City. A group of residents met after that first service to form the first Episcopal Church in the Territory of Nevada.

The service will be from the 1796 prayer book, which was still used in 1861. Portions of the original sermon used at the dedication of the original church building built in 1874 will be read by the current priest, the Rev. Mike Patterson. Attendees are encouraged to wear vintage attire. After the service, an old-fashioned fried chicken dinner will be served, with proceeds helping the Virginia City Senior Center and restoration of the historic church structure.
