A Carson City man was found shot to death Saturday afternoon in a remote area of Brunswick Canyon, but officials have declined to say whether he is the victim of a homicide or an accident.
"The investigation is ongoing, and we're starting our third round of interviews right now," said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong late Saturday afternoon.
Furlong said a man arrived at their office on Musser Street at about 9 a.m. saying that he was in the Brunswick Canyon area drinking with two friends when one shot the other. The man, fearing for his safety, then fled and drove to the courthouse parking lot next to the sheriff's office, where he called 911.
"There was evidence of that shooting on his vehicle," Furlong said, "and the man was very cooperative."
Authorities set up the search on Sedge Road, which is just off of Deer Run Road.
A homeowner in the area, Gary Fuller, said emergency vehicles were lined up in front of his house most of the day, but he was unable to learn any details about the search.
Officers scoured the hills in east Carson City and were able to locate the second man, whom Furlong said also cooperated with the investigation. The body of the victim was found around noon.
"We called in the Washoe County Crime Lab to help us and we spent all day processing the scene," he said.
Back at the sheriff's office later, Furlong said he was conducting an interview when a woman knocked on the glass front doors of the lobby and wanted to report her husband missing.
"That's when we knew that her husband was the victim," Furlong said.
All three of the men involved were middle-aged and from Carson City.
Authorities expect to make more information available today, but would not release the names of those involved or any other details of the shooting until they've completed their investigation.
However, Furlong said, alcohol was definitely a factor.
"Right now we're handling this as a death investigation," Furlong said.
The Carson City Fire Department was on the scene to put out campfires that were smoldering in the area, he said.
Furlong said searchers from neighboring Lyon and Douglas counties were also involved, since the location was so remote.
"It was a very difficult search because it was so far back there. We had the Civil Air Patrol help us find the exact location," he said.
