Obituary: Donald V. Weir

Donald V. Weir, 90, passed away peacefully in Carson City on August 15, 2011, surrounded by family and friends.

Don and his twin brother Robert A. Weir were born in Oakland, California on February 4, 1921 to Earl and Edith Weir. He attended Cleveland Elementary School, Oakland Junior High and Oakland High School. He went on to attend The University of California, Berkeley where he played baseball and basketball. He graduated from Cal with a degree in Business in 1943. Don was named to the 'All Time' 25 year sports team at Cal Berkeley.

Don signed up for the V7 program in the Naval Reserve and then attended Northwestern University in Chicago and obtained Naval Officer status. He then enrolled in the Harvard Business School and went on to graduate from Naval Aviation Supply School in Jacksonville, Florida. Don was assigned Carrier Duty on the USS Hornet in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Following his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Don returned to Harvard Business School and obtained his Master's Degree in business. Don married Pauline Gallegos on September 25, 1946 and together they had 3 children. He joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1948 and served as a special agent for 5 years. He then went to work for The National Bureau of Fire Underwriters in Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California.

In 1959 Don joined his brother Bob and began a career in the automotive business, going to work for Fidelity Oldsmobile in Berkeley, California .Two years later Don and Bob purchased the dealership. In 1967 the Weir brothers sold the dealership and Don moved to South Lake Tahoe, where he sold real estate. Don never got the car business out of his system and purchased Reno Dodge in November 1969. Don went on to own Carson City Dodge, South Lake Tahoe Dodge and Auburn Dodge.

Don met and married his devoted wife of 28 years, Julianne Martin, from Carson City in 1983. He retired in 1991. Don was an avid golfer and a member of Thunder Canyon Golf Club. He was a lifetime San Francisco Giant and 49er fan.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Edith, his brother Bob and half-brother Jack Weir. Don is survived by his wife Juli, son Don Weir (Toni), daughter Candi Moreland (Doug), daughter Kym Costa (Jeff), 8 grandchildren, Michael, Brigitte, Romi, Brandi, Tamsen, Brandon, Cody and Paden, 9 Great-Grandchildren, 3 brothers-in-law, Joe Martin (Nan), Jeff Martin (Cindy) Jimmy Martin and nephews Dick Weir (Suzanne) and John Weir (Carol).

A Celebration Of Life will be held at FitzHenry's Funeral Home at 11:00 am, 3945 Fairview Drive, Carson City, Nevada on Saturday, August 27, 2011.

Following the services there will be an announcement of a reception for friends and family.
