Artists reception today
An artists reception will be held 5-8 p.m. today in the Artisans Store at Brewery Arts Center.
The current art exhibit at the Artisans Store gallery is "Flavors." The reception will be a champagne and sorbet soiree.

Community Garden celebrates 10 years of harvests
Carson City Community Garden will celebrate its 10th year of operation at 5:15 p.m. Saturday with a garden party.

Carson City CrossFit holds grand-opening
Carson City CrossFit fitness facility will hold its grand-opening event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at 403 Hot Springs Road #2. According to their website,
Festivities will include a one-day, two-person team competition. With bragging rights on the line, four Army teams from Carson City are planning to participate, including two Army wives and even some future Special Forces soldiers.

Celebrate Labor Day with V&T in the movies
The Nevada State Railroad Museum will celebrate Labor Day weekend with the Virginia & Truckee in the movies featuring equipment used by Paramount, 20th Century Fox, MGM and RKO movie studios.
The event will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 3-5 at museum, 2180 S. Carson St.
The 1875 wood-burning locomotive Inyo, McKeen Motor Car and the regular steam train powered by V&T locomotive # 25 will all be in operation on Sept. 5. Train rides will be available on the regular steam train and on the McKeen Motor car.
Visitors are invited to watch classic films, The Harvey Girls and Young Tom Edison in the museum engine house and to see the real stars of the movies - the trains - at the museum.
The Harvey Girls will be shown at 6 p.m. Sept. 3. Young Tom Edison will be shown at 6 p.m. Sept. 4.
There will be new exhibits open in the interactive center along with movie memorabilia, model trains and behind-the-scenes experiences. Visitors also are invited to enjoy a scavenger hunt throughout the museum.
Barbecue food and drinks will be available for purchase during the day, and popcorn served during the movie presentations. A suggested donation of $5 is requested. The event is open to the public.

Date change for Evergreen rummage sale
The date for Evergreen Mountain View's annual No Resident Left Behind Rummage Sale has been changed to Sept. 10.
The sale is 7 a.m.-2 p.m. at 201 Koontz Lane, Carson City.
All proceeds go to the No Resident Left Behind Fun for Evergreen resident outings and activities.

Strings in the Schools program begins Monday
Carson City Symphony's comprehensive program of string instruction begins Monday.
Strings in the Schools, directed by Symphony Education Director Sue Jesch, provides free beginning violin lessons for students grades 2-5 and ensemble/orchestra experience for string students in all grades. Tuition and books are subsidized by the Carson City Symphony Association.
Enrollment is limited and classes will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Students are asked not to rent or purchase an instrument until after the first class. Some scholarships are available for instruments.

Beginning Violin, for students in Grades 2-5, is Mondays after school until 4:15 p.m. at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, and Wednesdays beginning Aug. 31 at Empire Elementary School.
String Ensemble, for students who have successfully completed the pre-orchestra class or have had previous experience on violin, viola, cello, bass, or harp, is 3:30-4:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 1, at the Carson High School band room.
STRAZZ, an alternative styles (jazz, Celtic, folk, fiddle) orchestra, for more advanced string players, is open to high school and middle school students by invitation. It is 2:30-3:30 p.m., Thursdays beginning Sept. 1, in the Carson High School band room.
Fleet Reserve association planning picnic
The Fleet Reserve Association will be hold their annual picnic on Sept. 10 at the James Lee Park in Indian Hills.
On the menu is golden brown chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs with all the garnished extras. The Ladies Unit will be bringing their treasured salads, deserts, and selected dishes.
It will be a day for feasting and games starting at 10 a.m. Members, prospective members and their families are all invited.
We hope to have lots of food and sea stories for everyone.
Heroes remembered at United Blood Services
United Blood Services is hosting a special day of remembrance for all the heroes who perished after the terrorists' attacks 10 years ago.
All Americans are being encouraged to participate in service and remembrance activities on the 9/11 anniversary this year.
The National Day of Service and Remembrance was established into law by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act in 2009, and is consistent with President Obama's overall call to service, United We Serve.
Service projects will range from food drives and home repairs to neighborhood cleanups and disaster preparation activities.
For Northern Nevada, UBS is offering a special event, "Heroes Remembered" on Sept. 10, where they are asking blood donors to donate a pint of blood - which can save up to three lives.
The special event will be held in all three of UBS' Community Donation Centers in Reno, Sparks and Carson City from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donors can schedule appointments today by either calling 324-6454 or by going online at www.BloodHero.com.
The Carson City location is at 256 E. Winnie Lane.
Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.
United Blood Services of Reno is the sole blood products' supplier to 20 hospitals in Northern Nevada. They need approximately 150 blood donations every day to meet the increasing demand for their three principal blood products, which are red blood cells, platelets and plasma.
VE exams in Stagecoach
Regularly scheduled testing sessions for Amateur Radio licenses are now available in Stagecoach. The next session will be Sept. 10.
Registration will be from 8-9 a.m., and testing will end around noon. Pre-registration is encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcome.
The exam fee is $15 and checks should be made payable to ARRL-VEC.
Testing is always on the second Saturday of March, June, September, and December of each year. The 2011 schedule is:
Testing will take place at the Stagecoach Community Center, 8200 Highway 50 East, next to the old Fire Station on the west side of Stagecoach Hill. Coming from the west, turn right at the fire station just before climbing the hill to Silver Springs. Signs will be posted.
Those who are upgrading an existing license should bring their original license and a photocopy of that license, as well as the originals of any CSCEs they may have. There are no copying facilities on site.

High Desert Horsemen offer trail trial
High Desert Horsemen, a local horse club that has been active since 2005, will be holding its annual Trail Trial Sept. 10 at Fort Churchill State Historic Park and Scout Camp in Silver Springs.
In past years, and this year, High Desert Horsemen have donated a good portion of the proceeds of this event to a local food bank, animal rescue and a children's riding program.
Awards will be given for first through sixth place, with the high point winners in each division receiving a beautiful trophy belt buckle. The divisions are: youth, novice, intermediate and advanced. Lunch and a special completion award will be given to all participants.

Virginia City hosts Civil War Days
The 8th Annual Comstock Re-enactor's Call to Arms, The Battle that Never Was, will be held on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-5, in Virginia City. The Comstock Civil War Re-enactors will put on a show for locals and visitors alike.
"A huge silver consignment is rumored to be leaving Virginia City for the South. Union troops have manned the city to protect the railroad convoy. It is hoped that union troops stationed at nearby Fort Churchill will protect the train if the Confederates try to capture the shipment. Both armies have sent out a call for reinforcements," said a visitors' bureau spokesman.
There will be a true period camp set up at Miners Park with tents, re-enactors and even a camp cook to show spectators how it really was during the Civil War era.
The Comstock Civil War Re-enactors are the only regional group to use cannons in their staged battles, and have partnered with the Virginia & Truckee Railroad to create a hold-up and ensuing battle with Confederate and Union troops.

The four-day event includes an educational school day, theater of "John Brown's Body," pancake breakfast, battle trains, Victorian tea, Civil War Battle in Gold Hill with VIP or bleacher seating, no-host barbecue, period dance and the annual Labor Day Parade at noon and a Civil War street battle 12:30 p.m. Sept. 5 on C Street in Virginia City.

4-H shooting sports clubs host state match
Carson City/Storey County 4-H Shooting Sports clubs are hosting the State 4-H Shooting Sports Match for the second year from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Capitol City Gun Club and Carson City Rifle Range.
Competitive shoots take place at the rifle range for air pistol, air rifle, .22 rifle, and muzzleloader. Shotgun and archery will be at the gun club. All 4-H'ers who qualified in their discipline are eligible to compete at this event.
Signups begin at 6 a.m. at the gun club, with opening ceremonies at 7:15 a.m. Shoots begin at 8 a.m. and continue throughout the day.
Concession stands are planned for each of the ranges. At 5:30 p.m., Nevada 4-H'ers, their families and leaders will gather at gun club for a barbeque/picnic of tri-tip, hamburgers and hot dogs. Awards begin at 8 p.m.

4-H entomology project offered
Let's get buggy! The kick off meeting for the first Carson 4-H entomology project takes place from 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 8 at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension's conference room, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 15.
Everyone interested in insects is invited to sign up for a project that is literally going to the bugs.
Plans include inviting exciting guest speakers, field trips to collect and identify interesting critters, and there will be a collection box to store specimens. The group might even learn how to do some scientific illustrations. Insects that might be collected and studied are butterflies, moths, dragonflies, crickets, praying mantis, beetles and more.
"The world is alive with insects, so let's get collecting and learning," said UNCE's Sandy Wallin.

Get Cluckin' at Carson City's first 4-H poultry club
Carson City Cooperative Extension is offering a new poultry club, Carson Cluckers, which will meet from 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 14 in the UNCE conference room, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 15.
Participants should come with a list of questions they would like answered. No birds allowed at this meeting. A surprise guest speaker will be available to share information on raising healthy birds for show and to answer questions.
Youth ages 7-19 are eligible to enroll in this project area. Parents will need to attend with their child. Call 887-2252 to register.
Sew up a storm with the new Carson 4-H Sewing Club
Carson City/Storey County 4-H is offering a new Carson City 4-H sewing club, Novice Needles.
Participants should come prepared to have fun, make new friends and learn some basic sewing skills. Tentative plans are to learn both hand- and machine-sewing.
All meetings will take place in the Carson City UNCE conference room, 2621 Northgate Lane.

Group working for justice reform to meet
CURE, Citizens United for Rehabilitation of Errants, is restarting a Carson City chapter with a meeting 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 6, at St. Paul's Lutheran Family church, at William St. and N. Saliman Ave. Followup meetings will be the first Tuesdays of each month.
CURE is a non-profit organization that began in 1972 in Texas to work for positive change in the prison system. Today it has chapters throughout the country and several international chapters. It was active in Nevada from 1998-2004.
The goals of CURE is to ensure prisons are used only for those who absolutely must be incarcerated and to help prisoners receive all the resources they need to turn their lives around. CURE also is involved in programs to compensate victims of crime and helping families of those incarcerated to understand and to navigate the justice system.
