Rockers to meet tonight

How do you know your gemstones are real and not a knockoff? Learn about some of the things to watch out for in today's gem market from John Osborne, GIA Gemologist and jewelry maker at tonight's High Desert Rockers meeting. Osborne has strong experience in gem identification and appraisal. He will also include tips and tricks of gem and cab making. If time permits, he will look at gems you bring in for quick identification. 

The free monthly meetings start at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of Capital Christian Center at 1600 Snyder Ave., Carson City.

Booths available for historical society flea market

The Douglas County Historical Society is having their end of summer flea market 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center parking lot.

The June flea market had 40 vendors and large crowds. Booths are available for the fall sale. A 10-feet by 10-feet booth space is $20 in advance, $30 on the day of the market.

Desert Brushes meeting planned

The Carson Valley Desert Brushes will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Johnson Lane Firehouse, 1460 Stephanie Way, Minden.

Painters of all levels, and those who would like to learn to paint, are welcome.

Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby this weekend

The 2011 Franktown Meadows Hunter Derby will host a day of equestrian excellence Franktown Meadows Equestrian Facility, Sept. 5 at 4200 Old Hwy 395 North, in Washoe Valley for the second annual $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby.

The derby is a day of equestrian excellence, champagne brunch, shopping in the promenade of shops, and viewing of a car display in support of ALS of Nevada.

ALS of Nevada is the only independent not-for-profit organization in the state serving persons and their families living with and fighting ALS. This organization works extensively to provide much needed programs offering emotional, physical, and financial assistance.
