130 YEARS AGO

J.M. Benton has built a new and substantial ice house below the Mexican dam, which he has filled with this year's first crop of ice, amounting to some 700 tons. Mr. Benton states that in the twelve years he has been in business, he has never been able to gather so much ice after the first freeze.

100 YEARS AGO

At noon today the Appeal received a telegram stating the Court House at Yerington had been destroyed by dynamite as the result of labor troubles. Residents were startled by a heavy explosion with many buildings rocked as if by an earthquake. The entire second story of the new Court House had been wrecked.

70 YEARS AGO

The plane that flew over Carson City this forenoon was a Douglas Mainliner flown from Oakland to Reno for use in training army air corps pilots under an agreement between the war department and United Airlines. When in Carson the plane flew low, causing surprise and comment.

50 YEARS AGO

Winds of more than 65 miles per hour toppled trees, trailers and signboards and broke several windows in Carson over the weekend. Total damage is estimated in the thousands of dollars.

20 YEARS AGO

Sheriff Paul McGrath unveiled a slimmed-down version of his traffic enforcement plan that includes an option for violators to go to traffic school to prevent moving violations from increasing insurance premiums.

10 YEARS AGO

An outcry over a national magazine's dubbing Battle Mountain the "armpit of America" cost a local newspaper editor her job and stunned the article's author, who insists he's fond of the mining town.
