Gov. Sandoval seeks to eliminate senior tax help

(AP) - A program that provides property tax assistance to low income seniors would be eliminated under Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval's budget proposal.

The program helps seniors on fixed incomes who are at risk of losing their homes. A legislative subcommittee was told Tuesday that it provided rebates for 17,764 people last year. The average check was $335.

Seniors were eligible for rebates if they made less than $28,677 in household income and met other conditions. Rebates were capped at $500 per year.

Eliminating the program would save the state about $11 million in the upcoming biennium. State lawmakers will discuss the matter further during the upcoming legislative session that convenes Monday.
