(AP) - Republicans have introduced a bill in the Nevada Legislature aimed at denying benefits to noncitizens.

SB178 would require proof of citizenship to register to vote, and proof of legal status to obtain a driver's license.

It would also make noncitizens ineligible for Nevada's Millennium Scholarship program and other government benefits, such as assistance for housing, education, food or unemployment.

Additionally, citizenship would be required to obtain grants, loans, and professional and commercial licenses.

The same bill would make it a felony to threaten exposing someone's illegal status to lure them into crime.

The bill was introduced Thursday and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
