130 YEARS AGO

The editor of the Austin Reveille abuses Captain Sam, the chief of the Piutes, because he comes about the office to borrow half a dollar. The Reveille man seems to forget that Captain Sam and his tribe were monarchs of the plains before the Reveille was heard of. Captain Sam is the least offensive of the numerous bores which frequent newspaper offices and he can easily be induced to leave by a contribution of five or 10 dollars. For the latter sum, he will be absent for six months.

70 YEARS AGO

From the Goldfield News of 33 years ago: Two miners ran out of celebration money, ate dynamite, got in a fight. One was blown to pieces by a body-blow and the other, heart-broken over losing his friend, jumped from a cliff and exploded.

50 YEARS AGO

The Nevada legislature opened the seventh week session with a charge that Civil Defense defied legislative intent by accepted a $9,800 federal mandate to hire additional employees. The charge was leveled by Archie Pozzi Jr.

Washoe Lake is at the lowest level in recorded history with the fifth straight year of drought.

Nevada has 520 nurses per 100,000 population, the worst in the country according to a report by the Health Resources and Services Administration.
