RENO (AP) - Reno Mayor Bob Cashell says he won't seek the seat being vacated by veteran state Sen. Bill Raggio.
Cashell told the Reno Gazette-Journal on Thursday that he thinks he can "do the most good" for the community as mayor and intends to remain in that position.
Raggio's resignation is effective Jan. 15, and Washoe County commissioners are expected to appoint his successor at either their Jan. 18 or Jan. 25 meetings. The legislative session convenes Feb. 7.
Cashell, a Republican who lives in Raggio's Senate district, was elected to a third term as mayor in November.
In announcing his retirement Wednesday, Raggio cited health reasons and slowing physical mobility. The Reno Republican was first elected to the Senate in 1972.
