Local bars gear up for big game

Local bars are preparing for Sunday's bowl game between Nevada and Boston College.

Emily Queyrel, the general manager at Bully's Sports Bar and Grill, 3530 N. Carson St., said this season has been one of the most successful for not only the Wolf Pack, but for the bar, too.

"We get a pretty good group in here," Queyrel said. "The Boise game we were packed ... there seems to be a little bit more of the home pride, if you will. I notice a lot more of everyone wearing more of the memorabilia."

She said the bar and grill will offer a hot dog and domestic draft special for $3.99 during the game plus 25-ounce beers for $3.99.

Over at MJ's Sports Bar, 3679 S. Carson St., owner Mick Kaffenberger said his bar will offer happy hour prices during the game, which starts at 6 p.m. on ESPN, and will give away prizes.

While it's been a successful year for the Wolf Pack, Kaffenberger said many of the games were available on local or national TV channels, which didn't necessarily drive traffic to sports bars.

"I've got more interest in it," he said. "But I have not got more customers because of it."

Nevada will move to the Mountain West Conference in 2012, which could make it more difficult for locals to watch some of the games at home unless they buy a television package for the MWC.

"I could benefit from that if more of the games were just on the Mountain West," he said.

Other specials include $1.50 pint drafts and $1 shots at Toad's Bar, 306 E. William St., and 25-cent wings and a pint with a slice of pizza for $5 at High Sierra Brewing Company, 302 N. Carson St., and regular happy hour specials at

the Firkin and Fox, 310 South Carson St.
