RENO (AP) - Reno city officials are considering creating a special property tax to district to buy 100 acres of a former golf course.
The city council will hold a public hearing on Jan. 19 on whether to create the district to support the creation of a public park. The city needs to raise $1.2 million from the tax to buy the land.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports other funds are being used to purchase the remaining 128 acres for $1.2 million for what will become a passive park with trails.
The Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority abandoned the golf course in December 2008, ripping out much of the irrigation equipment. The land now is reverting to sagebrush.
