Anytime Fitness helps feed hungry children

Anytime Fitness of Carson City will donate $10 for each new membership this month to Food for Thought, a local nonprofit organization that provides weekend meals to more than 800 children in the community.

"As you might imagine, feeding hundreds of children each week is a monumental undertaking considering each month we typically provide a total of 15,000 meals," said Rebecca Rund, founder and executive director of Food for Thought. "We are extremely grateful for our community partners and excited to be teaming up with Anytime Fitness for this win-win opportunity that will benefit so many local residents."

Anytime Fitness is located at 4530 S. Carson St. Membership hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Race series continues

The Winter Trail Series, sponsored by Ascent Physical Therapy, continues 8 a.m. Saturday with the Centennial Slug it Out 10K, which will start and finish at the north end of Centennial Park.

The entry fee is $20 and forms are available at Ascent Physical Therapy, 3246 N. Carson St., suite 120. There is no race-day registration.

Packets can be picked up at Ascent the day before each race.

Runners will receive one T-shirt for the series. A variety of swag will also be given out at the races.

The next race will be Love Can Be Cold, a 5-6 mile run at 8 a.m. Feb. 12 starting from the boat ramp on Carson River Road.

The final race of the series will be the Washoe(s) After Run 8 a.m. March 12 at the Washoe State Park headquarters in Washoe Valley.

All races are on dirt trails and may have poor footing in places.

Senior ski clinics at Diamond Peak

Incline Village General Improvement District's "One District One Team" will offer Active Adults 55+ Ski Clinics at Diamond Peak. Instructors, led by PSIA Level 3 Certified Instructor Richard Davenport will offer skill-appropriate ski clinics geared toward all levels of active adult skiers. Designed to encourage skiers aged 55-plus to start skiing, improve, adjust and modify current techniques and skills and promote skiing throughout life. Re-entry skiers will be introduced to the latest technology and equipment.

Wednesday morning clinics will begin at 9 a.m. with a social hour and continental breakfast in the Fireside Lounge, Diamond Peak. At 9:45 a.m. participate in a two-hour informative, interactive session.

Cost is $18 per clinic or $130 Clinic Pass good for all sessions. Prices include breakfast. A daily lift ticket or a season pass is required. Pre-registration is encouraged. Snow Camping 101 offered

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association offers an introductory training course in winter camping Feb. 26-27 and March 12-13. This course is an overnight snowshoe trek to familiarize you with winter travel methods and considerations, winter hazards and snow-camping techniques so you may safely enjoy the winter in the Tahoe region, led by two experienced TRTA guides and staff.

Learn how to pack and what to wear; basic outdoor orientation skills; winter travel hazards; winter survival techniques; campsite selection and set-up; winter backpacking cooking; Leave No Trace principles.

The class includes one morning of classroom training; two days and one night of hands-on winter camping experience with qualified TRTA guides and staff; two meals and cooking demonstrations; tips and tricks on how to make a winter overnight a comfortable and enjoyable experience; an opportunity to meet great people and immerse yourself in incredible winter beauty.

TRTA Snowshoe hikes

Free guided snowshoe hikes are offered by the Tahoe Rim Trail Association. Register by e-mail to Tom Rodriguez at programs@tahoerimtrail.org or call 775-298-0012.

Full-moon snowshoe hikes are available every month for TRTA members only. The USFS is offering snowshoe hikes in the Tahoe Meadows every Saturday beginning in January. The TRTA will partner with the USFS for several of the hikes.

Ski for free with Tahoe license plate purchase

The new non-profit Tahoe Fund is partnering with nine Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts in California and Nevada to offer a free lift ticket for every purchase of a Lake Tahoe license plate.

Plate sales fund bike trails, lakefront parks, interpretive programs and other tangible projects that enhance the Tahoe experience for residents and visitors alike.

Newly-issued Tahoe plates are $50 in California and $61 in Nevada.

The Tahoe Fund works with the California Tahoe Conservancy and the Nevada Division of State Lands as well as public and private entities to identify and obtain funding for on-the-ground projects that support conservation, recreation and environmental education in the Lake Tahoe basin.

The Plate for Powder Program continues throughout the remainder of the 2010-2011 season, or until tickets are sold out. Participating ski areas Squaw Valley USA, Alpine Meadows, Homewood, Heavenly, Northstar-at-Tahoe, Kirkwood, Sugar Bowl, Tahoe Donner and Tahoe Cross Country.
