Footprinters plan dinner meeting

The Carson Valley Footprinters will hold its monthly dinner meeting Thursday at the Plaza Conference Center in Carson City. A no-host bar starts at 6 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7 p.m.

The guest speaker will be Douglas County Deputy Sheriff Teresa Duffy. She will discuss fraud, scams and deception.

Historian to lead tour through Dayton

Local historian Eileen Cohen will lead the tour "Discover Dayton" on Saturday.

The day tour starts at

9 a.m. with a talk by two docents at the Dayton Valley Historical Museum, where there is an excellent pictorial display of the old town of Sutro and the Sutro Tunnel.

A short walk takes participants to the first jail, firehouse, and Pony Express station and to the location of Nevada's first gold discovery. A tour of Steven Saylor's Evergreen Studio follows.

After a no-host lunch at Compadres Restaurant, the tour continues to Dayton's cemetery where Old Virginny (Virginia City's namesake) and other notables are buried. The tour ends with a walk through the remains of Rock Point Mill.

Carson Toastmasters to meet Thursday

The Carson Communi-cators Toastmasters will meet 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday at Grandma Hattie's restaurant, 2811 S. Carson St.

Rockhounds to meet; slide presentation

High Desert Rockers will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25. The guest speaker will be cartographer Jack Hursh from the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology at University of Nevada, Reno.

Hursh has contributed to several tour guides concerning Nevada geology. He will give a slide presentation on the backroads of Nevada, representing adventures around Nevada's outback. Hursh will also have publications by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology that are of interest to rockhounds.

High Desert Rockers provides rockhounds an opportunity to network and share their finds. Attendance and refreshments are free, and the location continues to be at the National Guard Armory in Carson City, at 2460 Fairview Drive just south of the prison. (Please do not try to enter the gate before 6 p.m.)
