'Green Animation' films featured at BAC

The Brewery Arts Center's Friday Film Series continues today with a set of funny, short environmental films. The "Green Animation" films were produced by the World Wide Fund for Nature/UK.

The free family film starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall.

The BAC will also host a four-hour "Let's Make A Short Movie" workshop from 1:30-5:30 p.m. today for kids 6-16. Cost is $40.

Kids will animate a song with clay. They will learn to storyboard, develop characters, set lighting and shoot. The shorts will be shown July 15 at the last Kids & Families night.

CTHRA Moonlight on the Greens Golf Tournament 

Entries are due today for the third annual Moonlight on the Greens Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary.

The tournament will be July 15 at Silver Oak Golf Course. Cost is $75 per person and includes greens fees and cart, catered barbecue dinner, two cocktails, range balls, glow balls, putting contest, on-course contests and prizes for first, second and third places in the tournament and a raffle.

The format is a nine-hole, four-person scramble, with a shotgun start at 7 p.m. The tournament is limited to 72 players, and registration will be first-come, first-serve.

Proceeds will help the auxiliary projects.

This week at the farmers market

The Downtown 3rd and Curry Streets Farmers Market features a new vendor, J&P Ranch from Minden, selling bison and bison burgers.

The market is open 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

Tomatoes and other produce will be available at the market, and the musician this week will be Ricky D. Besides fresh produce, a number of other vendors will offer an array of items, food and children's activities. A vendor will be there to sharpen knives.

David Ruf from Greenhouse Garden Center will be at the market talking about composting and answering gardening questions. His seminar starts at 11 a.m.

Explore history and the skies at WNC

The Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College Carson City campus is hosting Saturday evening "star parties," which include a free lecture and telescope viewing of the night skies.

Featured presentation this week is "Houston, We Have a Problem -- The Story of Apollo 13." The epic adventure of three astronauts trying to return to Earth in a crippled spacecraft captured the world's attention.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m., with lectures offered by Mike Thomas at 8 p.m. Telescope viewing and tours of the observatory follow. Admission is free. For more information call 775-445-3235 or go to www.wnc.edu.

Virginia City hosts Americana festival

The third annual Americana Music Festival runs today through Sunday at numerous venues throughout the town, plus workshops and jam sessions.

Darrell Scott & Brothers headlines at 7 p.m. Saturday at Piper's Opera House.

Musicians present an array of genres at six venues, including Americana, folk, bluegrass, rockabilly, Irish music and blues.

Fourth Ward School will be open and offering visitors the chance to try their hand at playing an array of instruments and will host an old time sing-along at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Advance purchase of tickets for the headliner show is recommended. Tickets are $40 per person or $70 per couple. All other concerts and attractions are free.

Enjoy July Jazz Under the Stars

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams present an evening of Big-band Jazz Under the Stars from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday at Comma Courtyard adjacent to Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street.

Admission is $5 general, free for ages 18 and younger.

There will also be salsa dance instruction from 6-7:15 p.m. inside Comma Coffee for an additional $5.

"Come hear the music and dance under the stars!" said David Bugli, leader and pianist for the Mile High Jazz Band. "We'll play a great mix of your old favorites and some newer tunes. If it rains, we'll move the show indoors."

CTRH Auxiliary sponsers Tupperware fundraiser sale

Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary is holding a two-day Tupperware sale from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 14 and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. July 15 in the Main Lobby of Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to support CTRH Auxiliary projects.

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary is an all-volunteer, nonprofit, charitable organization whose purpose is to render assistance through public activities and fundraising in support of the Regional Medical Center, nursing scholarships and regional health care needs.

Cool pond plants make a beautiful summer pond. Beyond water lilies, water hyacinths and cattails, many unique and interesting pond plants, both annual and perennial, can be great additions to a pond environment. Reservations are not required but be sure to bring sunscreen as the seminar will take place at the center's outdoor demonstration pond.

Ruf will discuss creating a Great Basin garden that is drought-tolerant and low maintenance. Reservations are not required.

• All About Lavender, 9:30 a.m. July 30. Guest speaker Mike Campie, owner Campies Lavender Patch

Campie is a local lavender grower who has developed some new strains of lavender that perform very well in Northern Nevada's climate. He will also talk about making essential oil and soaps from lavender.

Auditions planned for 'Anne Frank' production

The Brewery Arts Center and The BAC Stage Kids will host an open call for young actors, singers and dancers, grades 7-12, for its upcoming production of "The Diary of Anne Frank." Auditions will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Maizie Harris Jesse Theatre at the BAC, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

Auditioners should come prepared with a one-minute dramatic monologue. Callbacks will immediately follow the open audition and will include vocals and movement. Tuition is $95. Some scholarships are available.

Silver City hosts Tune In To Kids Fair July 25

Now in its second year, "Tune In To Kids Fair: A Celebration of Life and Learning Beyond the Screen," will be held at the Silver City Park from 10 a.m. to noon July 25.

The free mini-fair is a collaborative effort of many groups, which will sponsor a morning of family-oriented activities designed to encourage parent-child interaction. The free fair serves families with children ranging from preschool through age 12, and hosts a variety of hands-on activities based on six themes: parent involvement, reading and media literacy, hobbies and recreation, math and science, arts and culture, and nutrition, gardening and fitness.

At the United Way Nevada Early Education Project booth, families will find gifts such as new books and activities such as soap experiments, crafts, hands-on math activities and story time.

For older children, the NASA Solar System booth with ambassador Michelle Wise Bellard will host hands-on science including Mars Rover demonstrations, straw rockets and Play-doh planets.

At the Silver City Community Partners booth, families will find new spins on kids' favorites including Play-doh, sand art, gardening, and old fashioned wooden blocks.

The fair is organized by Silver City Community Partners, part of Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey.

Carson City Salvation Army needs help to help students

The Salvation Army is asking for the public's help in providing school supplies for Carson City children in need.

With school out, many children don't have the free lunch they grew accustomed to during the school year. Many are not eating properly during the summer because there simply isn't enough food to go around.

"At The Salvation Army, I have heard it all," said Lt. Leslie Cyr, Carson City Corps Officer. "But there is nothing more crushing than hearing a child tell me that they don't want the other kids to know they're poor. These children feel that if they show up at school without the necessary school supplies, it's like plastering a sign on their backs that says 'I'm poor!'"

The Salvation Army is asking for donations of $35 to ensure that area children in need have the supplies necessary to be successful in their new school year. Donations will go toward back-to-school assistance and can be sent to the Salvation Army, P.O. 956, Carson City 89701. Donations can also be made online to carsoncitysalarmy.org.

V&T Full Moon Train Ride fundraiser planned

Soroptimist International of the Comstock is offering the second annual V&T Full Moon Train Ride fundraiser at 7 p.m. Aug. 12.

Boarding will be at the F Stret Train Station, three blocks down from C Street in Virginia City.

Cocktails, appetizers and dessert start at 5:30 p.m. and end at 6:45 p.m. It will be a full moon on the way back to the station.

The cost is $45, which includes appetizers, one drink and a door prize ticket. Additional drink tickets can be purchased for $5 each or three for $12. Sodas will be two for $5.

A raffle will be held with all the drawings done before the train leaves the station. Proceeds go toward projects that will improve the lives of local women and children.

Local teens can help Boys & Girls Clubs with school supplies

DoSomething.org and Staples are teaming up with the stars from ABC Family's hit show "Pretty Little Liars" for the Staples for Students Do Something for Kids in Need national school supply drive.

As part of the Staples for Students campaign, the stars of "Pretty Little Liars" - Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchell - are encouraging Carson City teens to make a difference this summer by collecting school supplies and dropping them off at their nearest Staples store through Sept. 17.

Staples customers will be able to get involved by donating $1 or more at any Staples store, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Carson City students in need.

All school supplies and donations will be given locally to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to ensure they get into the hands of disadvantaged youth just in time for the new school year.

The supply dropoff is at 915 Jacks Valley Road in northern Douglas County.
