Austin's House needs votes

Vivint Gives Back Project is giving away $1.25 million to community charities, and Austin's House has a chance to win $100,000 for the most votes in the Pacific Region. The emergency children's shelter is currently in 14th place in the Pacific Region in the final round of voting. Austin's House is about 26,000 votes behind and urgently needs people to vote once a day until Aug. 27.

The contest is being conducted on Facebook and it is easy to participate. It takes less than one minute to sign up and vote. Go to www.austinshouse.org and click on the orange heart icon on the right side of the home page. That will take you to the Vivint website where you sign in to your Facebook account, agree to "like" Vivint and allow additional permissions on Facebook. Then click on the vote box and you are done. Get ready for community luau

A community luau to benefit the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada will start off with cocktails at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. July 30 at the Elk's Lodge, 515 N. Nevada St.

The menu includes fruit salad, orange-vegetable salad, smoked pulled pork, jasmine rice with shrimp, and dessert. There will be hula dancers, opportunities to learn the hula and specialty drinks.

CTHRA Moonlight on the Greens Golf Tournament set

Time is getting short to enter the 3rd Annual Moonlight on the Greens Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary,

The Tournament will be July 15 at Silver Oak Golf Course. Cost is $75 per person, which includes green fees and cart, catered barbecue dinner, 2 cocktails, range balls, glow balls, putting contest, on-course contests and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in the tournament. There also will be a raffle. 

Format is a nine-hole, four-person scramble. For those who don't have a foursome, they'll be paired up. Shotgun start is at 7 p.m. The tournament is limited to 72 players so registration will be first-come, first-served.

Proceeds will help the auxiliary continue their work in helping the hospital and community.

Dayton Food Pantry's summer yard sale set for Aug. 6

A huge summer yard sale to raise funds for the busy nonprofit, Dayton Food Pantry, will be held Aug. 6 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the corner of 4 Enterprise Way and Highway 50 in Dayton.

Director Freida Carbery said donations of items for the yard sale are welcome, and can be dropped off at the Food Pantry Monday-Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Save Mart to raise funds for children's hospitals

All Save Mart, S-Mart Foods, Lucky, FoodMaxx, and Maxx Value Foods stores will sell paper icons for $1 from July 11-31. The funds collected will be donated to children's hospitals throughout Northern Nevada and Central and Northern California.

Shoppers can offer their support at the checkstand when they pay for their groceries. Once purchased, the icons will be displayed in the stores.

Children's hospitals combine personal care with sophisticated, state-of-the art technology to provide 24-hour care and services such as trauma, burn, neonatal intensive care and pediatric intensive care units to children with special needs from throughout the country and the world.

Classical guitar concert Friday

Sierra Nevada Guitar Society welcomes classical guitarist Arina Burceva in a special performance at 8 p.m. Friday at the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom, 449 West King St.

Since appearing at the 2009 Sierra Nevada Classical Guitar Festival, Burceva has gone on to become an international touring artist performing at festivals in the USA, Mexico, South America and beyond.

Originally from the Ukraine, Burceva received a master's degree in music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is considered one of the finest performers and composers of her generation.

Her concerts feature a balanced program of standards, contemporary works and her own exciting compositions.

Burceva's appearance is part of the Sierra Nevada Classical Guitar Festival & Competition July 14-17 at Squaw Valley, which includes various concerts in the Reno/Tahoe region. Festival brochures are available at www.sierraguitar.org.

AAA and Toyota/Scion hosting show and shine

On Saturday, July 16, the Carson City AAA office and Dick Campagni's Carson City Toyota/Scion Dealership will co-host a classic car show and shine event. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson City Toyota Dealership, 3659 S. Carson St. Barbecue and frozen yogurt will be available for purchase from Sierra Joe's and MmmmmYogurt. All classic car cruisers are welcome to participate; space is limited to the first 80 entrants. Entry fee is $25 and proceeds will benefit local charities. Volunteers sought for nature art hike

Volunteers are being sought for the annual Trails and Vistas nature art hike, scheduled Sept. 17 and 18 at Spooner Lake, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.

More than 50 volunteers are needed to serve as trail leaders, caboose, or greeters.

A workshop, "Finding Your Voice," will take place at 9-11:30 a.m. July 24 for volunteer Trail Leader development at The Cedar House Sport Hotel, Truckee. This relaxed and fun workshop will focus on storytelling skills, teach how to create small group trust and support, and give confidence for public speaking. No experience is needed to become a Trail Leader, just commitment and passion.

Sizzlin' summer dance workshop offered

Ayako's Dance Studio and Pinkerton Ballet Theatre is presenting their annual "Sizzlin' Summer Dance Workshop!" 9 a.m.-2 or 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday, July 18-28.

Professional guest instructors and faculty will teach all styles of dance - ballet, pointe, musical theater, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical, Pilates and more. You can register for one or two weeks. Drop-ins are welcome.

Guest instructors include Erica Chipp, Smuin Ballet of San Francisco; Ryan Frier formerly with Millennium On-Stage of North Carolina and Pinkerton Ballet Theatre's Nutcracker for the past five years; Beth Shrum formerly with the San Diego Ballet, now teaching Pilates; and current faculty instructors Natalie Berger, formerly with Ririe Woodbury Dance Company of Utah and Emily Driscoll.
