John Bullis: How green it is

It is great to drive into Carson City from any of the three highways.- From the east on Highway 50, the Eagle Valley East Golf Course is a welcome sight. All that green grass sort of says "this is a great place to live."

From the north on Highway 395, the Silver Oak Golf Course and the Carson Tahoe Regional Hospital complex also are impressive and a statement about the quality of life here in Carson City.

From the south on Highway 395, the Sunridge Golf Course also shows the green grass of part of that special golf course. Some folks have said that golf course is more difficult, but I don't have any problem hitting balls into the water there.

Several years ago I served on the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Manufacturers Committee. It was interesting to learn that many manufacturers came to our area, not for the low taxes as much as the wonderful quality of life.

The capitol grounds and the legislative landscaping help make our downtown area green and inviting.

The flowers on the light poles in downtown Carson and the other flowers some businesses display are a special touch. That also helps make our downtown area inviting and beautiful.

Driving around town you can see all the trees and flowers, especially in the historical district with the "blue line" walking tour.

When we built our office building back in 1980, I asked the contractor to try to move an old pear tree from the building site to the south parking lot. They said "we can do it, but don't expect it to live." Every year that old tree produces pears that the birds really enjoy. It's a bit of a mess to clean up the parts of pears the birds don't eat, but it is sure worth it.

You probably have seen the deer that seem to enjoy our town. We have seen many right at our office. It's good the drivers on Division Street seem to notice in time and slow down for the deer.

All in all, Carson City is a special place to live.
