Storey County

to celebrate

National Night Out

The Storey County Sheriff's Office will be host the county's first National Night Out event 7-10 p.m. Tuesday at Miners Park in Virginia City and the River District at Louise Peri Park in Lockwood.

National Night Out, established 28 years ago, is a time to come out as a family and meet neighbors.

Attractions will include music, local businesses, community groups, exhibitions, home safety tips, personal safety help, bicycle safety, giveaways, firetruck, police vehicles, community resource information and senior awareness program. Participating organizations include the Storey County Sheriff's Office and Fire Department, Victims' Services, Jeep Posse, the Community Chest, the Senior Centers, and local businesses.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime prevention, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Carson City also will host its National Night Out from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Mills Park.

Save Mart showcases giant grocery cart

In celebration of Hot August Nights 25th anniversary, a giant hot rod grocery cart will be showcased from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday at Carson City Save Mart, 4348 S. Carson St.

Save Mart's owner Bob Piccinini, a car and racing enthusiast, first debuted his customized shopping cart at this year's NASCAR Sprint Cup Toyota Save Mart 350 in Sonoma, Calif.

The customized cart is 12'6" tall 8'3" wide and 11' long and weighs 3,000 lbs. Its 28-gallon tank uses Sunoco race fuel 110 octane. The engine is a Watson Racing Chevy 454 with 520 horsepower and 550 foot pounds of torque. The transmission is a Turbo 400, has a custom built rear end housing with a Ford 9" gear with 3:73 gear ratio. Although top speed is undetermined at this time, the cart is built for speed accelerating from 0 to 60 in about 8 seconds.

To kick-off Hot August Nights and celebrate Save Mart's sponsorship, Big Red will visit each Nevada Save Mart store and give the community an opportunity to take pictures.

Children's books

to be distributed in Silver Springs

EyeC Books is sponsoring a book drive to benefit Silver Springs families and children 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 6.

This event has two purposes: to distribute books to families and children and to collect books to continue this effort.

EyeC Books expects to give away more than 100 packets of free children's books.

Vouchers have been left with to the FISH store in Dayton, businesses, churches and the welfare office in Silver Springs , and Child and Family Services in Fernley to distribute to families in need. The vouchers can be brought to the Aug. 6 event and exchanged for a bundle of five books. Children can also pick up vouchers at the event. Books will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Evening of music and memories offered

Silvertown, an Evening of Music and Memories will be offered by the Comstock Residents Association will be from 3-11 p.m. Saturday at the Washoe Club112 N. C St. in Virginia City.

Entertainment includes Sopwith Camel, The Woodys, Red Rose, The Klaptones and Guitar Woody. Special guest will be Darius and the Various Cocktails.

A $15 donation includes dinner and an evening of historic Comstock Music. There also will be raffle prizes.

The event is also presented by KLAP FM, The Hayseed Hoot, The Reno Blues Society and Tahoe House.

Proceeds will benefit the fight against open pit mining in the Virginia City National Historic Landmark.
