Legislature: Lawmakers redirect fees to supply lawyers for poor

(AP) - Nevada nonprofits defending indigent people in court may be getting a steady funding stream.

Members of the Assembly on Monday approved a bill that redirects $5 to $10 of fees charged for filing certain documents in district court. The bill already got approval from the Senate and now heads to the governor.

The fees come are attached to notices of default or sale, or from an initial filing in a district court.

The measure was promoted by former Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley. She is director of a southern Nevada nonprofit that offers legal services to people who cannot afford to pay a lawyer.

Democratic Las Vegas Assemblyman William Horne said the measure has been in the works since last session.
