Umpqua plans renovation of branch at Moana Lane

Umpqua Bank will take care of its own as it hires a contractor to handle a major renovation of its flagship Reno branch at Moana Lane and South Virginia Street.

The company will give builders who are customers of Umpqua Bank first crack at bidding for the project, which is expected to begin in October with completion next March.

Dave Funk, senior vice president and regional manager of Umpqua's Nevada operations, said the renovation will include construction of a nearly all-glass exterior for the main portion of the building, modest exterior renovation of a two-story office complex on the north side of the building, and extensive interior renovation.

"This will be a wonderful new asset on this corner," Funk said.

Tectonics Design Group and architect Michael John McCall are handling engineering and design of the project.

Ray Davis, president and chief executive officer of Umpqua Bank, which is headquartered in Portland, Ore., said the company believes the area around Moana and South Virginia is undergoing significant change and needs strong partners in the business community.

The renovated interior will include a computer cafe, a "Discover Wall" that highlights neighborhood events and the bank's neighborhood involvement, a program that spotlights local merchants and their products and a hotline connected directly to Davis.

The bank's commercial lending team for the northern Nevada area will remain headquartered in the renovated building.

Umpqua Bank recently acquired the 11,096-square-foot building from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which took the failed Nevada Security Bank, the building's former owner, a year ago. Umpqua, which assumed Nevada Security's deposits, has been operating the location as a branch since the takeover.

The bank's remodeling comes as the Regional Transportation Commission plans to widen Moana Lane, including a redesigned intersection at Moana and South Virginia.
