Members of the Nevada National Guard, Nevada Air Guard, and civilians celebrated Flag Day and the 236th birthday of the United States Army at a ceremony held at the Veteran's Memorial Wall on the Capitol Grounds Tuesday.
"Flag day isn't just simply about honoring a particular design on cloth. It is more about taking the time to reflect on our freedoms and the principles of our great national for which that flag stands," said Army Col. Cori Powers, Nevada Army Guard director of personnel.
She encouraged those in attendance to support a law that would give Congress the authority to protect the flag from desecration.
"It is up to us to remind Congress that the flag belongs to 'We the People' and the people want their Stars and Stripes protected," she said. "Gatherings like this are important and we should always remember it is much easier to fight for our flag in the halls of Congress than it was in the halls of Montezuma and other places where American's have bled for old Glory."
The event also featured a historic five-flag ceremony performed by the Nevada Air National Guard's Non-commissioned Officer Academy Graduate Association
