Employers that have taken steps large and small to improve the health of their workers will be recognized during a first-ever "Healthiest Places to Work" event in October.

Nominations are due July 8, and the process will culminate in recognition during the annual Healthcare Forum sponsored by the Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 12.

Sarah Sommers, a member of the committee organizing the healthcare forum, said the "Healthiest Places to Work" competition reflects a desire to provide ideas that participants in the forum can put to work in their own companies.

"We want them to walk away with something tangible," said Sommers, director of sales and a partner in Solutions at Work, a Reno human-resources company.

Possibilities for recognition include steps by employers to support healthy lifestyles among workers and steps to support work-life balance.

Participating companies also will be asked about the support of top-level management for wellness initiatives.

The competition is open to any company with five or more employees. Winners will be named among employers with five to 25 employees, among those with 26 to 100 employees and among those with 151 or more employees.

Judging will be handled by a panel of business and healthcare executives in northern Nevada.

After nominations are submitted, semifinalists will be announced in August. As part of the final judging, workers at semifinalist companies will be surveyed online.

Nomination materials are available through www.reno-sparkschamber.org.
