Bill to increase car insurance minimum

(AP) - Legislators says a bill that would increase the minimum vehicle liability insurance may be a good idea, but some fear it would be onerous for the poor and indigent and result in more uninsured drivers.

AB120 is sponsored by Assemblyman William Horne of Las Vegas.

Horne says Nevada's rates haven't been changed in decades and don't reflect the higher costs of medical care.

But the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports insurance industry representatives told the Assembly Transportation Committee on Tuesday that the bill would raise rates 18 percent to 54 percent, depending on the company, the driver's age, location and driving record.

The bill was referred to a committee workshop.
