Local Soroptimist club seeks grant applicants

Soroptimist International of Carson City is now accepting grant applications from nonprofit organizations serving the Carson City community.

The grants program was designed specifically to distribute funds to worthy causes in the local area. Grants in 2011 will range from $250 to $500. Projects in the areas of health, education, economic and social development, international good will and understanding, human rights/status of women and the environment will be considered for funding.

Organizations interested in applying can download the application at www.sicarsoncity.org.

Casino Night sponsored by Dayton Kiwanis

The Dayton Township Kiwanis will hold its annual Casino Night on 5-10 p.m. today at the Dayton Senior Center. This year they will feature craps, 21, bingo and roulette.

The event will feature a silent auction and many raffle prizes. Patrons will be able to purchase barbecued pulled pork sandwiches, pickle and chips for $5.

Players will be able to cash in their winnings for items in the Kiwanis Store. There are no cash winnings as all the proceeds go for scholarships for deserving graduating high school seniors.

Tickets are $10 if purchased in advance, along with 100 tokens. To reserve advance tickets, call Theresa Kenneston at 443-5245 or April Romo at 220-4520.

Bingo to aid meal program

Carson City Community Bingo begins Sunday. Anyone older than 21 is invited to the Senior Citizen's Center, 911 Beverly Drive for an afternoon of bingo.

Funds from community bingo, which will continue on the second Sunday of each month, will help support the Meals On Wheels program and the senior center.

Doors open at noon and play begins at 1 p.m. Cost is $10 buy-in. Specials are $1 each. There also will be drawings and refreshments available. Lunch will be served to seniors for a $2.25 donation.

City manager to speak to Leisure Hour Club

Carson City Manager Larry Werner will speak to the Leisure Hour Club at its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Nugget.

As the chief administrative officer for Carson City, Werner will share his insights and perspectives on the ever-changing environment of our city, the proposed City Center Project, and take a look at the challenges and opportunities facing the city and its residents.
