Paul Schat's opens cake, tea shop

Paul Schat's Bakery at the Carson Mall opened a cake and tea shop on Friday.

The 1,500 square foot expansion includes a black-and-white interior decor with chandeliers. Besides cakes, the bakery also serves Italian gelato and candies. Owner Paul Schat said he will start selling loose leaf teas in about two weeks.

"Still trying to procure some of the loose leaf teas I'm looking for," he said.

The bakery's expansion started six months ago. Besides a new area for customers to sit, Schat added a new kitchen and oven to accommodate the cake-making business, which has meant a lot more work for Schat behind the scenes.

"It's not as easy as people think," he said while preparing a tiramisu for a customer.

He adds, "The main focus is to start pushing cakes. Then we're going to start doing birthday cakes and wedding cakes."

The bakery is open 6 a.m.-6 p.m. daily at the Carson Mall, 1212 S. Stewart St.
