Fundraiser set for Heavenly boarders

A Sober Shred Night, a fundraiser to help defray costs for the Heavenly snowboard team to attend the nationals, is scheduled from 7:30 to 10 p.m. today at the Tumbleweeds Gymnastics, located at 2231 Meridian in Minden.

The cost is $15, which includes dinner.

Food distribution this morning

RSVP Carson City volunteers will be distributing free USDA commodity foods from 9 a.m. -11 a.m. today at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Any needy family in Carson City can be eligible by signing the "Issuance Sheet" at the community center certifying that their household's annual income does not exceed federal poverty guidelines, which are $20,036 for a single and $26,955 for a couple.

A picture ID/drivers license must be provided. Food may be picked up for the homebound or those unable to attend by bringing a signed note from them and their picture ID.

RSVP and the State Commodity Food Program order all food that is available; however, if the food runs out it is because the groups could not obtain more. Persons declaring large families for commodities may be asked for proof of family members.

Free star viewing events continue at observatory

Saturday evening Star Parties continue to be offered at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory, and are free to the public. Observatory doors open at 6:30 p.m., and lectures begin at 7p.m. Tours of the facility are provided, and weather permitting, telescope viewing is offered.

On Saturday, Mike Thomas provides an encore presentation of his "Alexander the Great" lecture. The story is that of the young Greek king who goes on to conquer the known world in the third century B.C., and is filled with intrigue and adventure.
