Open house planned at Christian high school

Sierra Lutheran High School, the area's only Christian high school, invites the public to an open house |2-4 p.m. Sunday.

During the past year, the school moved from its temporary facility in Minden into a brand new campus on the south side of Carson City, near the intersection of Highway 395 and North Sunridge Drive, next to the fire station.

The school currently serves 85 students in grades 9-12. These teenagers represent 25 different Christian churches in the Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton communities. The academic curriculum focuses on a college preparatory program within an environment that nurtures spiritual growth and faith development.

Rockhounds to meet Tuesday 

Rob Vugteveen, special projects manager for the Northwest Territorial Mint in Dayton, is the guest speaker for the March meeting of High Desert Rockers. After his presentation, there will be an opportunity to sign up for tours of the mint.

The meeting will be 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesday Nevada National Guard Center, 2460 Fairview Drive, Carson City.

Rockhounds are encouraged to bring rocks for show and tell. There also will be refreshments, door prizes and a silent auction.

History trip features Douglas County

A trip through the history of west Carson Valley is planned for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 8.

The tour takes in three cemeteries, including Mottsville Cemetery where Dr. Eliza Cook and other historic notables are buried; seven old settlements that were way stations on the Emmigrant Trail; plus Snowshoe Thompson's homestead.

A Chautauqua performance of Dr. Cook will be presented at lunchtime at the Laura Springs Ranch with a walk-through of the doctor's house.

The tour begins at Laura Springs Ranch, 1456 Foothill Road, north of Kingsbury Grade and south of Walley's Hot Springs. Cost is $30, which includes lunch.
