Prep Roundup: Senators pound out 16 hits in win

The Carson baseball team pounded out 16 hits and used some aggressive baserunning to take an 11-4 Sierra League game at McQueen on Wednesday.

The Senators are 9-3, 5-2 in league play at North Valleys today.

After last week's storm, which canceled a few of the Senators' games, the offense - like the weather - had been luke warm, scoring seven runs in a pair of wins. However, on Wednesday Carson's bats heated up pounding out seven doubles. Eight of the nine Senators had hits with seven players having a multiple hit game.

Adam Whitt drove in three on two singles; Chance Quilling had two doubles and two RBIs; Casey Wolfe had two singles and two RBIs; Rory Petersen had three hits, including a double, and an RBI; Nick Domitrovich and Colby Blueberg both had two hits, a double and RBI; Austin Pacheco had two doubles, an RBI and scored three times; and Dion Copoulos had a single.

Carson coach Cody Farnworth said getting the Senators back to seeing live pitching on a regular basis helped key the offense.

"We had better pitch selection and were more aggressive (at the plate)," Farnworth said. He said the Senators also were aggressive on the base paths in stretching singles into doubles.

Carson was behind 3-1 after the first inning as McQueen got to Carson starter Charlie Banfield. Banfield settled down not allowing another run until the fifth.

The Senators tied the game in the second with two runs and took the lead in the third with another two runs. They would push another run across for a 6-3 lead in the fifth.

After McQueen cut the lead to 6-4, Banfield left surrendering four runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out two. Drew Moreland came in to relieve Banfield and ended the threat.

"(Charlie) didn't have his best stuff today, but he battled," Farnworth said adding the sophomore hadn't pitched in awhile.

Carson would blow the game open with five runs in the sixth.

Farnworth was happy with the inning as the Senators scored a majority of their runs with two outs.

Moreland finished up on the mound not allowing a run in 2.1 innings of two-hit ball to earn the save.

Carson plays its fourth game of the week today before taking Friday off. The Senators then play at Damonte on Saturday.

Farnworth said that four games in four days will be a good test for the team, especially the pitching staff.

"It is going to be good for us," he said. "It is going to be the same thing come playoff time."

JV BASEBALL

Carson falls in extra innings

The Carson JV baseball team erased a three-run deficit in the sixth inning Wednesday night but it wasn't enough as the Senators fell to McQueen 7-6 in nine innings.

Carson found itself down 6-3 heading into the sixth, but the bats came alive as Gehrig Tucker singled and later scored on Logan Krupp's double. Krupp would eventually score. After Dominic Norton was hit with a pitch he scored on a single by Andrew Hudacko.

Hudacko finished 3-for-5 on the day. Rafe King went 2-for-4; Nevin Elliott was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles; Krupp finished 2-for-3; and Tucker and Norton each added hits.

Tyler Valley started the game for Carson. He left in the middle of the fifth inning after being hit in the elbow. He struck out four. Tucker took the loss striking out four in three plus innings of work.

The Senators return to action today hosting North Valleys.

JV SOFTBALL

Carson sweeps Wooster

The Carson JV softball team improved to 7-4 by sweeping Wooster in a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Carson won the first game 4-3, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The rally was started by a leadoff double from Sara Brewer. After singles by Malia Tiffer and Morgan Barton, Skylar Jones ripped the game-winning double. Becka Breuer pitched a complete game for Carson picking up the win.

Carson won the second game, 9-3, behind a complete game pitched by Maddy Von Duering. Carson was led by Aubrey Northrup who was 4-for-4 with homer, triple and two singles. Also getting multiple hits for Carson was Kandis Tuttle (3-for-4 with a double), Malia Tiffer (2-for-4) and Morgan Barton (2-for-4).

Carson hosts Reed at 3:30 p.m. today.

GOLF

Dayton fourth in Winnemucca

Mike Peterson fired a 76 to lead the Dayton golf team to a fourth place finish at Winnemucca on Wednesday.

Peterson finished tied for fourth. Lucas Jones (89), Clay Stoll (91), Ty Minor (94), Bailey Allison (95) combined for a team score of 445, good enough for fourth place.

Fallon (390), Lowry (405) and Elko (419) finished ahead of the Dust Devils.

It was the second match of the season for the Dust Devils who finished seventh last week in Fallon.

"Everyone's scores went down," said coach Brad Wick, adding that nerves may have caused higher numbers than expected last week.

The Dust Devils return to the course on April 7 at Fernley.
