Obituary: Robert (Bob) L. Diaz

Robert (Bob) L. Diaz, a Carson City resident, passed away on March 24, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was 76 years old. Bob was born on Dec. 15, 1934, in San Jose, Calif., where he lived for 57 years. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years Linda Diaz, daughter Leanne Diaz; sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Annie Niebling, Robert and Margaret Niebling, John and Tobie Diaz; sister Rosalie Diaz; grandchildren Jennifer, Jacqueline, Laura, Jonathan, Harley; and great-grandchildren Nick, Paul, Damien, and Kennadi.   

 

Bob served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955 to 1958 and held the rank of sergeant when he was honorably discharged. In 1958, he began his 31-year career with the Department of Public Works for the city of Campbell, Calif., ending his career as public works superintendent. He was an active member of the Maintenance Superintendents Association serving as president in 1976-1977, as state board representative 1978-1979 and receiving the Outstanding Maintenance Superintendent award in 1985. During his 15 years as superintendent, Bob assisted the city council, the and recreation commission, and numerous citizen groups in developing and implementing park improvements, arterial street planting programs, and street and landscaping maintenance policies. During his spare time, Bob also coached many fast-pitch girls' softball teams over the years for Blossom Ridge Bobby Sox and the San Jose Police Athletic League. He was an excellent pitching coach. Bob and Linda retired to Carson City in 1991 where he pursued interests in golf, target shooting, gardening, and playing guitar.

 

Services will be at 11 a.m. May 20 at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that tribute gifts be made to the Association at www.ALSA.org or to the ALS division of MDA at www.als-mda.org
