Car chase begins in cemetery

Carson City deputies were led on a brief chase Wednesday evening that resulted in an intoxicated woman driving through a cemetery.

Laurie Ann Hancock, 43, was pulled over after the Carson City Sheriff's Office received multiple reports of a drunk driver near Lone Mountain Cemetery.

The deputy that pulled Hancock over noticed a large, open bottle of whiskey in the passenger seat, which she denied drinking despite alleged slurred speech and watery eyes.

After the deputy went to retrieve a field sobriety kit, Hancock sped away and traveled over multiple grave sites, until reaching Beverly Drive where she nearly hit a car, according to the sheriff's report.

She then drove north on Roop Street after plowing through a stop sign, the report said. She then allegedly ran another stop light at Roop and Stewart streets and began driving into oncoming traffic lanes to bypass other cars.

Deputies say she was traveling about 75 mph.

When she tried turning on Northridge Drive, the car slid into a concrete median and left the roadway. Once the car was stopped, she then allegedly took a swig from the bottle of whiskey.

She was pulled from the car and transported to the hospital where she was arrested.

Hancock had four warrants for her arrest in Carson City and had a revoked driver's license for a previous DUI. Deputies also found a glass pipe with white residue and a bag of white substance in the car.

In all, Hancock was arrested on suspicion of six felony counts, including the warrants, eluding and possession of meth. No bail was set for some of the potential charges. She also was arrested on suspicion of six misdemeanor violations, including destruction of cemetery property.

Bail was set at $52,858.
