Early farmers market today

You don't have to wait until June for the fresh produce at a farmers market. The Mini Spring Farmers Market is 9 a.m.-1 p.m., today and continues on Saturdays through June 4 at the Greenhouse Garden Center south parking lot.

Annual DAWG yard sale today

The Douglas Animal Welfare Group will host its annual yard sale from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. today.

The giant sale will be set up at 2878 San Jose Court, Minden, in the Saratoga Springs subdivision.

Community flea market in Minden

The Carson Valley Lions Club is putting on a flea market from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. today at Minden Park. Those who have cleaned out your garage, want to sell a collection, or want to promote a business can set up booths.

The Lions Club will also sell food during the event.

Owners of unclaimed property sought

The State Treasurer's Office, Unclaimed Property Division, is advertising more than $490 million in abandoned property currently being held by the state in an effort to return money to its rightful owners. The advertisements, which will appear in 17 newspapers across the state over the next few weeks, list the last known names and addresses of people whose abandoned property was reported to the Unclaimed Property Division between March 2010 and April 2011.

Besides reviewing the newspaper section containing the latest names and addresses, the Unclaimed Property Division recommends that Nevadans search at its website to find missing abandoned property. Go to https://NevadaTreasurer.gov and click on the yellow "Search for Unclaimed Property" box. It also includes an extensive Frequently Asked Questions section.

Star Party offers epic adventure story of Antarctic

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for Saturday's Star Party at the Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College. The lecture starts at 7 p.m.

This Saturday's program is "Sir Ernest Shackleton and the Trans-Antarctic Expedition," presented by Mike Thomas. This slide-show lecture brings to life the true story of Shackleton's attempt to cross the continent of Antarctica, from sea to sea in 1914.

The presentation is filled with photographs taken during an expedition that became the role model of leadership in extreme circumstances, and survival against all odds. It depicts the struggle of the men who tried to save their ship, the "Endurance," and themselves. This is a story of an epic adventure.

Weather permitting, there is a telescope viewing provided every Saturday evening after the lecture.

The Saturday Star Parties are free to the public.

Capital City Dems to meet Wednesday

The Capital City Democrats will meet in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Building, 709 E. Robinson St., at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Plans for upcoming events will be discussed, including support for a candidates' barbecue which will be sponsored by the Carson City Democratic Women's Club in July.

Pizza, drinks and dessert will be available before the meeting, starting at 6:30 p.m. Donations welcome, but not required.

St. Teresa's Bingo night schedule changes

There has been a change in St Teresa of Avila's Youth Ministry Bingo.

Starting on June 3, the night for Bingo will be the first Friday of each month, not twice a month. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the games start at 7 p.m. The last game is a Progressive Double Action.

The net proceeds are used to support all areas of youth ministry and religious education. The group will have a few special nights during the year will be advertised for attendance. 

The youth group is open to all 8th-12th grade students. They meet every Sunday before the 5 p.m. teen Mass, and they attend Mass  together. After Mass, they continue their fellowship in Chartz Hall at the church at 3000 N. Lompa Lane, until about 8 p.m.

Lunch features speaker from women veterans' program

The monthly networking lunch for veterans, active duty and their families is scheduled for 11 a.m. May 28 at the Silver Springs Senior Center with special guest speaker Zola Ferguson, Women Veterans' Program manager.

Ferguson will answer questions about the benefits and services available to women veterans at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, and will describe other resources such as the Center for Women Veterans:

The Silver Stage Task Force, a nonprofit group of community volunteers from Stagecoach and Silver Springs, will provide beverages, desserts and homemade breads for the lunch. Participants are invited to bring their favorite green salads.
