130 YEARS AGO

Paint mine: A ledge of terra sienna discovered by H. R. Logan, of Empire, near the Carson river, tested by house and sign painters of Carson when mixed with oil proved to be better than paint ordered from San Francisco. When taken from the ground here, it is like red chalk and can be made into paint by simply mixing it with saliva. The Indians use it to paint their faces and manufacture it by combining with fish oil.

120 YEARS AGO

Barn fire: Jim Townsend says that a farmer in Mono had 2,000 barrels of popcorn in a barn that caught fire. The air was filled with showers of popcorn.

70 YEARS AGO

George Meyers: Warren Engine Co. No. 1, Carson's pioneer firefighting organization was represented for hours on the fire line by a no less important personage than George Meyers, first assistance chief! Some Lions Club ribbing had Meyers taking a fishing trip to Marlette, caught poaching and forced by the forest service to fight fire. The truth was he was at Marlette to deliver the hose and to give the benefit of his firefighting experience as a Warren official at the blaze.

50 YEARS AGO

The Carson City Council is investigating the possibilities of replacing Vet's Housing which was established in 1946. The facility was provided for the purpose of supplying needed housing for returning veterans.

20 YEARS AGO

Carson High School reports: History Day winners Andy Watson and Dennis Crawford, sophomores, won first place in the Northern Nevada National History Day competition.

10 YEARS AGO
