There will be plenty of sun and warm weather for folks to enjoy the holiday weekend, as well as a lineup of local activities.

The National Weather Service in Reno is forecasting party cloudy skies Friday night with 15-25 mph breezes and a high temperature of 48 degrees.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy, but the temperature could go up to 60 degrees and a chance of showers Saturday night.

Sunday is also expected to be mostly cloudy with a possible high of 64 degrees.

Clouds will hang around Sunday night through Monday with breezy conditions and highs for Memorial Day from 68-73 degrees.

The weather shouldn't be a problem for those intent on enjoying some of the local celebrations:

• The Virginia & Truckee Railroad equipment will be operating for the Nevada State Railroad Museum's annual Memorial Day Steam-Up. The train runs every 40 minutes from 10 a.m -4 p.m. Saturday through Monday.

The museum is on Highway 395 at Fairview Drive in Carson City.

New exhibits feature several historical objects never exhibited before at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

"This is the first major renovation to the museum's Jacobsen Interpretive Center since it opened 21 years ago," said Curator of Education Frank Ackerman.

A combination museum admission/train fare will be collected for each person upon arrival. Fees are: $3 for ages 6 through 11, $5 for ages 12 through 17 and $10 for adults.

The museum is located at 716 N. Carson St. at the south end of Carson City at the intersection of Fairview Drive. A yellow train station and red water tank at the entrance to the museum grounds are landmarks.

• The Disabled American Veterans and other veteran organizations will place U.S. flags on Veterans Cemetery graves in Lone Mountain Cemetery starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts will assist the veterans. A flag will be available to those who want to post one on veterans' graves in other areas of the cemetery. Following Memorial Day activities 4:30 p.m. Monday, flags will be removed from the graves.

The public is encouraged to participate in placing and removing of the flags. For more information, call Wayne Willson at 885-7351 or Ron Gutzman at 882-6528.

• A Memorial Day service will be 1-2 p.m. Monday at Lone Mountain Cemetery off Beverly Drive. Immediately following the service, around 2-2:15 p.m., the Carlin Camp 25, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will lay a wreath at the Civil War statue in Grand Army plot at the Lone Mountain Cemetery to mark Memorial Day and the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.

The group is heir to the defunct Grand Army of the Republic, the main Union veterans' organization, which at one time included 8,000 posts across the country and included the Custer Post 5 in Carson City. They do historical research/presentations on the Civil War and related topics, represent Civil War veterans at veterans' events, and keep alive the memory of the sacrifices they made as soldiers keeping the country together between 1861-1865 and their patriotic activities as veterans afterwards.

• Celebration of Heroes Memorial Day events will take place in Virginia City.

The weekend includes The Battle Born Showdown car show, staged along E Street by the Ramada Virginia City from noon-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday. There will also be vendor booths, food and fun.

Participating Douglas County museums are the Courthouse Museum in Genoa and at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center in Gardnerville.

• Evergreen Gene's will host its annual Memorial Day BBQ, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, to honor veterans and thank the community for its support over the past year.

Everyone is invited to enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers.

All veterans will receive a 25 percent discount on purchases at the store that day as well as free food.
