Obituary: Norma Meyers Elliott

Norma Meyers Elliott, the daughter of Joseph and Dorothy Mair, was born on November 2, 1940 in Denver, Colorado and died in Reno, Nevada on November 8 of cancer. She grew up in Arvada, Colorado and graduated from Colorado State College in Greeley with a degree in Art. She taught in Ely, Nevada in grades K-12 where she married Gene Elliott on May 9, 1968. The couple moved to Reno where they were blessed with one child. Norma worked as a teacher and later, as a secretary for the Department of Agriculture for 20 years before retiring in 2000. She loved to travel and view the arts. She and Gene traveled to Europe and Egypt, viewing museums and architecture and visiting relatives in Austria. She enjoyed cooking, keeping up her home and reading one book a week. She will be remembered for her love of animals, both domestic and wild. She was very active in the Reno Gem and Mineral Society, was a member of the Nevada Museum of Art and the Reno Automobile Museum, and gave to a great many charities.

She is survived by her husband, Gene; her son, James; her brother, Jim Meyers; her sister, Dorothy Lee Meyers all of Colorado, plus many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews in Colorado and Austria. Norma was preceded in death by her father, mother, and stepfather Harold Meyers. Burial will be at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada.

A celebration of life will be held at the Covenant Presbyterian Church at 6695 Mae Anne Avenue in Reno (746-8118) on Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, any donations to the American Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
