Local realtor earns CASA volunteer of the year award.

Christine Barger-Millard has been honored as the 2011 Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children volunteer of the year.

Barger-Millard is a Carson City realtor with Coldwell Bankers Best Sellers and has volunteered with CASA for 10 years. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children to ensure they aren't lost in the legal and social services system. Volunteers stay with the child they are appointed to watch over until that child is placed in a permanent home.

"Chris has been a great CASA volunteer with great 'stick-to-it-iveness,'" said Chris Bayer, director of the Carson City CASA program, in a statement. "She has great perseverance and dedication in dealing with these cases. Her efforts truly make a difference."

Dickey's to open in Carson

A Dickey's Barbecue Pit location will be developed in a 1,448-square-foot location at 3250 Retail Drive, near the Walmart store on College Parkway in Carson City.

The franchise is owned by Hatice and Farrokh Gecol.

Thoran Towler named Nevada Labor Commissioner

Thoran Towler, who will be based in Carson City, has been named Nevada Labor Commission. Towler most recently a deputy attorney general for the Nevada Attorney General's Office. He also has worked as a deputy district attorney in Carson City, as a litigation associate in the employment law group for Jones Vargas and as a law clerk for the Fourth Judicial District Court in Elko.

He earned a bachelor's degree in technology from Walla Walla College and earned his law degree from Gonzaga University School of Law.

Meridian Financial Insurance names new president

Roger Cole has been appointed the president of Meridian Financial Insurance in Carson City.

Cole is a longtime Northern Nevada resident, having attended Elko High School and the University of Nevada, Reno. He has been in the insurance industry for more than 30 years and in his new role will head all of the operations for the Carson City-based agency.

BANN offers free LEED exam prep

The Builders Association of Northern Nevada will host a free training and preparation course for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Associate exam.

The exam is a prerequisite for LEED Accredited Professional certifications.

Class sizes are limited. This free course is made possible through a Workforce Training Grant administered by NevadaWorks.

Students desiring to take this free course must be currently employed and must provide proof of employment. Membership in BANN is not required and any currently employed person may register for the class.

The class is Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the BANN offices, 5484 Reno Corporate Drive, Reno.

Carson City attorney receives lifetime achievement award

George Allison of Carson City firm Allison MacKenzie was awarded the Judge Howard D. McKibben Model of Professionalism Award by the Nevada State Bar Association.

The lifetime achievement award recognizes attorneys "committed to the rule of law and embodies the principles of respect, courtesy and civility," according to a press release.

"I'm deeply honored to be selected to receive this award," Allison said in a statement. "As Nevadans, I think our core values of respecting individuals, respecting team efforts, respecting hard work and respecting the individualism of small business are principles we constantly strive to carry out in representing our clients."

Allison co-founded the Carson City-based law office of Allison MacKenzie out of the firm Laxalt, Berry and Allison, which was founded in 1968. He has litigated cases involving employment termination and discrimination and business torts.

NBC to host monthly breakfast with Sparks assistant city manager
