130 YEARS AGO

The attendance at the State Fair is by far the largest of the season, with double the number of passengers in the forenoon. In the pavilion to the right is a cylindrical press, churning off copies of the State Fair Herald. Next we encounter the inevitable mammoth melons, the giant squash and the mastodon cabbage, over which the inevitable "Oh, My!" has always been heard.

100 YEARS AGO

Judge Farrington is to move the Reeves case to Salt Lake City for trial. Due to the seriousness of the case, the judge fixed the bonds at $15,000 each. The three girl witnesses remained over in this city pending termination of the case. They may return to Salt Lake City this evening.

70 YEARS AGO

Fifteen year old Lee Vernon Gibson settled down to a life term in San Quentin Prison as one of the youngest ever admitted following his conviction of (killing) James Burk, 63, a crippled caretaker of a flour mill in Alturas. Gibson locked Burk in the mill and then set the building on fire. Gibson was once a student at Stewart Indian School.

50 YEARS AGO

Stray cats were the problem at the last City Council meeting. The caretaker of a Caroline Street house said the owners left cats, which he did not want and will not feed. One of the cats returned to the house after the others were turned over to dog catcher and he wanted to know why. The dog catcher responded that her only responsibility was really just dogs.

20 YEARS AGO

This year's Candy Dance grossed $98,000, which, after expenses, should leave about $70,000-$80,000 to run the town. It was estimated that 25,000 people attended the event.

10 YEARS AGO

Nevada livestock had an anthrax outbreak that killed 30 cows outside Gerlach at the edge of the Black Rock Desert.
