Katheryn Arnold Farris earns prestigious scholarship

Katheryn Arnold Farris, a doctorate candidate at Oregon State University, was awarded the science, mathematics & research for transformation scholarship to pursue a Ph. D. in computer science. The SMART scholarship is offered by the Department of Defense. Only 8 percent of all applicants receive the award.

Farris graduated with a bachelor of science in applied mathematics/economics from the University of Arizona in 2008 and was commissioned into the United States Air Force as a First/Second Lieutenant upon graduation. Her first assignment was at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. In 2010 she promoted to 1st Lieutenant and was awarded the Air Force Research Laboratory Commander's Cup Award.

Later in 2010, she transitioned out of military service into civil service as a research scientist. She has co-authored two articles published in peer-reviewed journals, the International Journal of Systems Science & The Ohio Journal of Science, and currently, she has a patent application pending with the U.S. Air Force.

Farris attended middle school and one year of high school in Carson City and graduated from the Millennium High School in Goodyear, Ariz.

She is the youngest daughter and step-daughter of Nancy and Tom Cleaves of Gold Hill, and George and Brit Arnold of St. George, Utah.

Brauer graduates from Park Univeristy

Staff Sgt. Matthew J. Brauer, a 2001 graduate of Carson High School, received his bachelor of science, magna cum laude from Park University. He majored in criminal justice administration law enforcement. Brauer is currently serving at Malstrom Air Force Bases in Montana. He is the son of Wendy and Jeff Fuhrman.

Latham enrolls at University of Charleston

Keely Latham of Gardnerville has enrolled at the University of Charleston in West Virginia, with a psychology major. Latham joins an entering freshman class of 245. All of UC's new students will have the opportunity to jump right into their majors without having to sit through traditional first-year college courses. Members of the freshman class had an average score of 22 on the ACT and an average high school GPA of 3.39.
