Carson ready for playoffs after 4-2 win

Carson High's girls soccer team concluded its regular season with a 4-2 win over Galena on Monday night.

Now, the Senators have several days to prepare for their home playoff opener next Monday at 7 p.m. Carson doesn't know it first-round opponent, only that it will be the third-place finisher from the High Desert League.

There is no doubt that Carson has Douglas in the back of its mind, and junior midfielder Kenzie Tillitt said that is where those thoughts need to stay.

"The last couple of years we've been looking at games in the future," said Tillitt, who scored a goal in Monday's win. " Douglas is out there, but we need to focus on the game ahead of us.

"Right now, we have to work on rejoining I guess you could say. We haven't been quite there. Tonight we were a little sloppy. We were just kicking the ball downfield. We weren't connecting well."

Coach Randy Roser wasn't OK with how his team played, but he knows the Senators could have played better.

"It's a matter of putting a whole 40 minutes together," he said. "For between 20 and 30 minutes I thought we played well. We just have to put it together."

Monday's game was scoreless until the 32nd minute when Josilyn Daggs scored, but Galena came back about 15 seconds later to tie the game at 1.

"Our defender thought she had (the ball) it, but really the Galena player had it," Roser said.

Tillitt gave Carson the lead for good at 2-1 when she scored in extra time right before the half.

Carson maintained its one-goal advantage in the first 18 minutes of the second half. The closest Carson came to scoring was in the 45th minute when Daggs' shot was bobbled by the Galena keeper. The ball bounced up and hit the football goalpost giving the Senators a corner kick.

The Senators took control for good when Chantal Torres and Daggs scored two minutes apart for a 4-1 lead.

"Those (scores) put it away," Roser said. "It gave us a chance to get some of younger players some time out there."

Galena closed to 4-2 in the 65th minute off a corner kick. Goalie Emmy Heller appeared to get screened out on the play.

Carson almost scored in the 77th minute, but Tillitt touched a ball a little too hard and the Galena keeper made the save.

JV girls tie

Carson and Galena battled to a 1-all tie.

Galena scored three minutes into the game when the Carson keeper dropped the ball, and that was the only score until the 68th minute when Jenna Buonacorsi scored for the Senators.

Carson did a good job of possessing the ball, but was unable to finish.

Arlette Mariscal, Danielle Sandage, Josie Veneziano and Becca Matley played well for the Senators.
